Men's Soccer Hosts UMBC In America East Quarterfinals

UAlbany Sports Information   11-03-2017

ALBANY, N.Y. – After finishing the 2017 regular season in fourth place, the University at Albany men’s soccer team will host five-seed UMBC in the America East quarterfinal round on Saturday, November 4.

The defending champion Great Danes earned a 4-2-1 record in conference play this season, matching their conference record from a year ago. The team’s 12 overall wins were the most in the regular season among America East teams.

UAlbany ended the regular season with two games on the road. The team tied Stony Brook 0-0 in double-overtime before defeating Binghamton 2-0 on the last day of the regular season. After a brief two-game skid, the Great Danes rallied to go 3-0-1 in their final four games without allowing a goal.

UMBC ended its regular season on a three game slide, falling 3-1 at Vermont, 1-0 at Hartford, and 2-0 against Stony Brook. Including a 1-1 tie against Delaware, the last win for the Retrievers was against UAlbany on October 14.

Three of the Great Danes’ four losses this year were by one goal. UMBC was the only team to defeat UAlbany by a greater margin. One more victory by UAlbany ties their single-season Division I era program best of 13 set last year.

The winner of UAlbany/UMBC will play at one-seed Vermont on Wednesday, November 8. In the other quarterfinal game, three-seed New Hampshire hosts six-seed Stony Brook. The winner will visit two-seed UMass Lowell in the semifinals.
