BOSTON, N.Y. – Melissa Nealon of the University at Albany field hockey team was tabbed the 2019 America East Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league on Thursday.

Nealon becomes the first UAlbany female student-athlete to earn the distinction since 2011 and the second overall. Stony Brook’s Nick Grande was named the 2019 America East Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The 2019 NFHCA Third Team All-American, currently carries a 3.90 GPA as a graduate student pursuing a Master’s Degree in higher education having completed her undergraduate term with a 3.83 in human biology.

Nealon is a two-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction and National Academic Squad member and was named to the America East All-Academic team in 2017 and 2018. The Mechanicville, N.Y. native received the 2019 Elite 18 award, given to the athlete with the highest cumulative GPA competing in the championship

Nealon wrapped up a spectacular junior campaign on the field this fall as she finished the season with a nation-best .813 save percentage, leading the Great Danes to their sixth America East Championship. She also ranked in the top-three nationally with a 0.80 goals against average. Nealon garnered NFHCA All-Northeast Region First Team honors and was named the 2019 America East Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.

The Scholar-Athletes of the Year were voted on by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement Committee. Each year, the committee elects a Scholar-Athlete in each of the league's 18 championship sports following the fall, winter and spring seasons and from that group, chooses one male and one female as the conference's Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
