#18 Field Hockey Returns to America East Play

ALBANY, N.Y.— This weekend the #18 University at Albany Field Hockey team returns to America East competition. On Friday, September 29th they will host the UMass Lowell River Hawks at 2 P.M. on Alumni Turf, and on Sunday, October 1st they will travel to Burlington, Vermont to battle the UVM Catamounts at 2 P.M.

The Great Danes (4-4) return to America East competition after a 1-1 weekend against two tough non-conference opponents, #8 Delaware and #4 North Carolina. UAlbany’s 3-2 overtime win against Delaware, the 2016 defending national champions, moved their NFHCA ranking to #18, two spots higher than their previous position (#20).

Melissa Nealon was named the America East Defensive Player of the Week for her two lights-out performances. Nealon stopped 22 out of 26 shots last weekend, recording her career-high single game saves (13) against Delaware. Both Kelsey Briddell and Katie MacCallum were offensive threats; each scored two of the four goals from the weekend.

The River Hawks will enter Friday’s match-up 5-5 on the season. So far this season, UMass Lowell has only faced one ranked opponent, Stanford, from the America East West Division where they fell 4-3. The River Hawks currently average 1.9 goals per game with a 0.122 shot percentage.

Player to Watch: Sophomore Anouk Lalande from Belgium leads the River Hawks in points (17), goals (8), and shot percentage (.296). Lalande earned the first America East Offensive Player of the Week (8/29) this season for her three-goal performance over Hofstra.
Against UAlbany: Currently UAlbany leads the all-time series record 6-0. The last meeting was on October 30, 2016, where the Great Danes swept UMass Lowell 5-1. Junior Frederike Helmke was a threat in the offense scoring one of the five goals.

Before hosting UAlbany, Vermont will face America East opponent New Hampshire this Friday. Vermont is 4-5 on the season. Their most recent win was a 1-0 victory against the Bryant Bulldogs. Vermont outshot the Bulldogs 8-3 with five penalty corners. This season the Catamounts have recorded 18 goals total, outshooting their opponents 15.1 to 12.3.

Player to Watch: Junior Landon Warren leads the team in points (16), goals (8), shots (31), and shot percentage (.258). Against Bryant, Warren scored the single goal in the 48th minute.
Against UAlbany: The Great Danes lead this series 16-5. UAlbany last met Vermont in Burlington shutting-out the Catamounts 3-0. Senior Anna Bottino scored the first goal in the 29th minute.
