UAlbany Sports Information   02-23-2018

Madeira Beach, Fla. - The UAlbany Softball team started off the 2018 season strong in Madeira Beach, Florida for their first game of the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational, defeating Rhode Island 5-4.

Rhode Island struck first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a runner from third base on a single to center field.

Shaye Swiatek started off the top of the third with a base hit and then stole second on a passed ball. Kelly Spear reached on an error when the short stop overshot the throw to first, allowing her to advance to second. The error also allowed Swiatek to cross the plate, scoring the first run for UAlbany which tied the game.

Donna Conrad and Chelsea Henige both worked the count for a walk, pushing Kelly Spear to third and loading the bases. Spear then scored on Kelly Barkevich’s single to left field giving the Great Danes the lead, 2-1. The lead wouldn’t last, however, as Rhode Island scored back-to-back runs in the bottom of the fourth, giving them a one-run advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Kelly Barkevich got on base on an error which brought Alexa Corben home to score the equalizer. Sarah Petzold then grounded out, moving Barkevich to third. Barkevich would score on a double to left field by McKenzie Bump, giving the Great Danes the lead once again.

At the top of the sixth, Aliyah Wade reached second on a single and a stolen base. Wade scored on the next play when Kelly Spear hit a double to left field, advancing the lead to 2 runs.

Rhode Island answered in the bottom of the seventh inning, closing UAlbany’s lead to one run. Then, with Adriana Toro in scoring position, Caileigh Holland singled up the middle. Toro rounded third and made a break for the tying run, but was thrown out at home plate on a rocket from UAlbany centerfielder Aliyah Wade, sealing the victory for UAlbany.

The UAlbany Great Danes step back on the field Saturday at 1:30 PM where they will face Nicholls State University in their second game of the Madeira Beach tournament.
