Emma Powlin’s four goals and a strong second half weren’t enough for the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team to overcome No. 4/5 Syracuse in a 19-12 loss at the Carrier Dome on Thursday.

Facing the nation’s top offense that averages 20 goals per game, the Great Danes fought back from an 11-2 halftime deficit, with Powlin scoring three times in the second half.

Six different UAlbany players scored in the game, including Kyla Zapolski, who had a hat trick to go with eight draw controls.

Bridget Simmons also scored twice for the Great Danes in her collegiate debut, while Sam Tortora, Paige Werlau and Kaylee Rickert added a goal apiece.

UAlbany ran of a streak of three consecutive goals in the second half, with Werlau, Simmons and Rickert scoring in a span of 1 minute, 53 second to cut Syracuse’s lead to 13-6.

Later, Sam Tortora scored with 9:54 to play to get the Great Danes within six goals, 15-9. But UAlbany couldn’t narrow the lead further after SU answered with two goals to stretch the lead back to 17-10.
