Quote: “I want to thank everyone that drove out from Albany to the game, the crowd support we had was unreal.  We played outstanding defensively, I thought JD [Colarusso] in the net, that was probably the best game of his life, and defensively we did not give them good opportunities.  TD [Ierlan] kept winning faceoffs, and it gave us a chance to get into a rhythm.”- UAlbany head coach Scott Marr

Recap: The #3/4 UAlbany men’s lacrosse team kicked off the 2018 season in strong fashion, knocking off #8/7 Syracuse 15-3 in the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse struck first off a man-up situation as Jamie Trimboli scored on a hard shot to the corner about three minutes in.  UAlbany peppered the goal on a couple of possessions, including one on man-up, but Syracuse’s goalie saved a trio of low shots.  JD Colarusso saved a couple of his own, leading to a UAlbany clear and a Jakob Patterson goal from Alex Burgmaster off a run to the cage and laser in the right corner with 3:13 left in the 1st.  Eight seconds later, TD Ierlan raced after a faceoff win and scored unassisted to put UAlbany in the lead.  Each side had a couple of sides later in the quarter, with UAlbany leading 2-1 after one.

Into the second quarter, Tehoka Nanticoke scored his first career UAlbany goal, getting inside his defender and netting the ball on the doorstep three minutes into the period.  Troy Reh and Connor Filipowski forced turnovers in front of the cage to stop Syracuse possessions.  As the back and forth continued, Fields found Patterson for another goal off a ground ball to a close range strike.  With UAlbany shutting out Syracuse in the 2nd quarter, UAlbany took a 4-1 advantage into halftime.

With three quick faceoff wins from Ierlan, UAlbany jumped out to a big lead in the third quarter.  Nanticoke scored next to the crease again with a defender on his back, Justin Reh netted a goal close range off a pass from Kyle McClancy, then Nanticoke added another score on a high bouncer over the shoulder of the keeper.  UAlbany led 7-1 with 11:22 left in the 3rd.  Syracuse broke its scoreless run with 6:02 left in the 3rd with a transition goal.

UAlbany’s faceoff wins and quick attacks continued to pay dividends as Nanticoke added another goal with 5:49 left in the 3rd off a faceoff win by Irelan.  Connor Fields added two more off a heave long range and a transition goal, then Nanticoke added another next to the goal circle with the shot clock on.  UAlbany led 11-2 after three quarters.

Into the fourth, UAlbany continued the attack, as Patterson scored his third on a run to the cage, weaving with one hand on the stick, and then Fields with a behind the back pass to McClancy for the five-meter rip and score.  Syracuse got a goal back in transition with 7:46 left to pull within 10 at 13-3 UAlbany.

UAlbany finished strong, scoring a pair of late goals from Sean Eccles and a fourth by Patterson.  UAlbany took the victory 15-3.
