UAlbany Volleyball Falters Two-Set Lead in Defeat vs. UNH

Records: UAlbany (1-13, 1-1 AE), New Hampshire (7-9, 2-0 AE)

Short Story: The UAlbany volleyball team had a two-set lead but fell in a five-set match against rival New Hampshire in a rematch of last year’s America East Tournament title contest.

Key Stats:

  • UAlbany: Aquabata Okenwa hit .326 for a double double of 16 kills and 14 digs, adding four blocks. Tatiana Tiangco had 12 kills while Kelly Cameron had a double double on 43 assists and 15 digs.
  • New Hampshire: Gabri Olhava and Kennedi Smith each contributed 13 kills, while Mali Jereczek had a double double of 49 assists and 15 digs.
  • UAlbany hit .315 in the first two victorious sets, but .108 in the following three.
  • With 19 digs tonight, Nicole Otero has 1,140 career digs, moving into eighth all-time in UAlbany history, passing Laini Leindecker.

Set Situations:

  • UAlbany allowed back-to-back points just twice in the first set, having runs of at least 3-0 five times.
  • At 18-18 in the second set, Nicole Otero served UAlbany through a 4-0 run to take the lead for good.
  • At 12-9 UAlbany in the third set, UNH took seven of the next eight points and did not relinquish the lead.
  • A 4-0 UNH run gave the Wildcats a 20-14 advantage in set four to eventually take the set.
  • UNH began up 8-1 in the tiebreak set; UAlbany had a late 4-0 run but could not make up the deficit.

Recap: Despite a two-set lead to begin the match, the UAlbany volleyball team fell to reigning conference champion New Hampshire in five (25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 9-15) at the University Gym.

Using three kills from Okenwa, UAlbany got off to a 8-3 start in set one.  After an Emily Tanski kill, Gabrielle Hansen served UAlbany through a 4-0 run to make it 12-4.  At 16-10, UAlbany used two blocks to fuel a 6-1 streak, effective winning the set.  UAlbany took set one 25-14.

Set two was back-and-forth early, with each set having a couple of early 3-0 runs.  UAlbany took a 15-13 lead off kills from Okenwa and Taylor Robinson; later UNH got back the lead at 17-16.  UAlbany broke away at 18-18 with two Chloe Evering kills and two Nicole Otero aces sent UAlbany ahead 22-18.  UNH got to within two, but UAlbany held the lead and took the game 25-21.

At 9-9, Okenwa had two kills in a 3-0 run to send the Great Danes up 12-9.  UNH got seven of the next eight to go up 16-13.  UAlbany got back to within two at 19-17, but Tanski had two late kills to lead UNH to win set three 25-19.

An early 4-0 run off Courtney Bowman’s serving gave UNH a 7-4 advantage.  At 12-7, UAlbany used kills from Tatiana Tiangco and Robinson to get within two at 13-11.  The teams exchanged until a 4-0 UNH run made it 20-14.  UAlbany could not make up the deficit and fell 25-18.

UNH won eight of the first nine points of the five set, later leading 12-4.  Emily Zimmerman served UAlbany through four straight points, but the Great Danes fell 15-9 to fall in the match in five. 

UAlbany is back in action tomorrow at the University Gym, taking on UMass Lowell at 6 p.m.
