Recap

The University at Albany men’s soccer team, riding a three game win streak, visited St. Bonaventure on Sunday, looking to continue their current hot streak.  Despite out-shooting the Bonnies, UAlbany fell by a final score of 1-0.

The Great Danes had a chance early in the first half when senior forward Afonso Pinheiro ripped a shot off the post that would have given the Danes a 1-0 lead.  Instead, the game remained scoreless through the first half.

In a trend that would continue all afternoon, UAlbany held the advantage in shots taken through the first 45 minutes by a margin of 6-5.  UAlbany goalkeeper Danny Vitiello (2-1-0) had also made four saves in the first half.

St. Bonaventure broke through early in the second half when Isaiah Wilson placed a shot past Vitiello’s left side off a cross from Jon-Michael Perkins into the UAlbany box to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead that would prove to be the final score.

The Great Danes outshot St. Bonaventure 10-3 in the second half, and 16-8 for the game, but were unable to break the Bonnie defense.  St. Bonaventure was able to take greater advantage of its chances, as six of the Bonnies’ eight shots were on target compared to six of UAlbany’s 16.

UAlbany will return home to host American on Friday, September 15, in the team’s fourth home game in their first six.
