NORFOLK, Va. – The UAlbany women’s soccer team fell in its 2017 season opener at Old Dominion 3-0 on Sunday night in Virginia.

UAlbany (0-1) held Old Dominion (2-0) to one goal in the first half with even shots at six each.  ODU got two second half goals to seal the win.

“This was certainly not the result we were after, but I thought it was a positive performance from the team tonight,” said UAlbany head coach Nick Bochette. “ODU is well-coached, talented and athletic, and I was happy with the chances we created and the growth we’ve seen against such a formidable opponent.”

Mariah Williams led UAlbany in chances with five shots, putting two on goal, while Vivian Vega and Kimberly Dieroff each had shots on goal as well.  Sophia Chen, in her collegiate debut, had four saves and three goals allowed in the defeat.

Jackie Stroud, Talia Tapper and Emily Roberts had the goals in succession for Old Dominion.  Krista Moisio had the shutout win in goal with four saves.

Williams had the first shot of the season in the second minute, missing left of the post.

In minute 10, UAlbany got the ball into the box twice with a scrum, but could not get off shots on either chance.  ODU went the other way and sent a long range shot, hitting the crossbar and going above the goal.

Action picked up around the 14th minute as Dieroff’s shot was saved by the keeper, resulting in a corner kick.  A foul on UAlbany ended the threat after the kick.  ODU tried to counter, seeing Emma Gervase’s shot be blocked.

After some back and forth play, UAlbany took two attempts on the goal in five seconds, the first being blocked and the second by Miranda Badovinac going wide, keeping it at 0-0.  ODU again tried a counter as a shot by Kira Laurento was saved, but a foul on UAlbany set up a penalty kick.  Stroud converted the PK to make it 1-0 ODU in the 33rd minute.

Williams got off another shot before the end of the half, but UAlbany trailed 1-0 at the break.

ODU pushed to the corner after a shot was blocked in the half’s opening minutes, resulting in a corner kick.  UAlbany held as an offsides ended the chance.

Minute 54 saw Williams with another chance on cage with a ground ball shot, being saved by Moisio.

Following a yellow card on UAlbany, an ODU free kick landed inside the box.  Tapper tapped the ball past a diving Chen and into the net for a goal to make it 2-0 Monarchs through 59 minutes.

UAlbany nearly got its first goal in the 71st minute as a free kick was sent into the box.  Vega got a header towards the right post as a diving Moisio got a hand on the ball and tapped it away.

ODU countered the other way as Morgan Hall lasered a shot from 15 yards out as a diving Chen made the save up near the post.  A resulting corner kick did not lead to a shot.

UAlbany’s offense kept pushing forward and getting pressure in the box, but was getting off shots. ODU added its third goal off a corner kick and conversion by Roberts to make it 3-0 Monarchs with four minutes left.

UAlbany had a final gasp in the closing minutes as Sophia Eifler had a shot from outside the box, missing wide.  UAlbany fell to Old Dominion 3-0.

UAlbany will head to the Centennial State for its next two games, taking on Colorado College on Thursday, August 24th at 5 p.m. ET (3 p.m. MT).
