Baseball Splits Doubleheader With UMass Lowell

UAlbany Sports Information   04-08-2017

LOWELL, Mass. – The University at Albany baseball team (10-12, 3-5 AE) started its third America East series on Saturday, playing a doubleheader against UMass Lowell (13-12, 4-3 AE).  Originally, the Great Danes were scheduled to host the Riverhawks, but unplayable field conditions forced the games to be moved to Lowell, where UAlbany would still play as the home team.  The Great Danes split the doubleheader with the Riverhawks, losing the first game 4-0 and winning the second 4-2.

The first game unfolded without a run through the first six innings, before UMass Lowell scored two in the top of the seventh, and two more in the top of the ninth, defeating UAlbany 4-0.  Kevin Donati had two hits for the Great Danes, and starting pitcher Jack McClure lasted 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.  In relief, Hunter Torres pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the second game, UAlbany opened up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, behind a three-run home run from Travis Collins.  The Riverhawks got on the board with one run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth, before UAlbany scored one in the bottom of the sixth to bring the final score to 4-2.

Donati once again had two hits, and Collins drove in all four UAlbany runs.  Starting pitcher Kenny McLean lasted 4.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits with four strikeouts and four walks.  Dominic Savino pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

“I thought the guys bounced back nicely in the second game,” said head coach Jon Mueller.  “Jack was a tough-luck loser in that first game.  He pitched tremendously again.  Offensively, it was a tough day to score, but I thought that we battled back nicely in the second game which sets the stage for tomorrow.”

On Sunday, UAlbany will seek its first series victory in America East play with the rubber match against the Riverhawks starting at 12:00 p.m.
