Campbell Places 11th At NCAA Indoor Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University at Albany senior high jumper Matthew Campbell placed 11th in his signature event at NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday.  Campbell cleared 7-00.50, tying in height with ninth place Ken Legassey from Arkansas, and 10th place Zachary Blackham from BYU.

The winner, Trey Culver from Texas Tech, cleared 7-05.00, as did runner-up Kyle Landon from Southern Illinois.  Campbell’s personal best height of 7-02.50 would have tied him with four other jumpers between places five and eight.

As teammate Grace Claxton did yesterday in the women’s 400m, Campbell earned Second Team All-America honors, to go along with his First Team All-America honors from last year’s outdoor championships.  Campbell has now exhausted his indoor eligibility, and will not compete again for UAlbany until the 2018 outdoor season.

“Any time you can finish higher than you’re seeded that’s always good,” said high jump coach Todd Wolin.  He had two monster jumps at 7-02.50.  He just hit the bar on his second attempt, and he just ran out of room on the third.  He looked really good, and of course he’s a little disappointed, but it’s the end of a great indoor season.  Now we’ll train for a year to get ready for outdoor 2018.”

With Campbell concluding his participation at NCAA Indoor Championships, UAlbany’s 2016-17 indoor season has finally come to a close.  While Claxton and Campbell will not continue on with the team for the upcoming outdoor season, the remainder of their teammates have already begun the transition between indoor and outdoor, and will compete in their first outdoor meet on Saturday, March 18 in Puerto Rico.
