UAlbany Sports Information   03-10-2017

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University at Albany senior sprinter Grace Claxton placed 12th overall in the 400m dash at NCAA Indoor Championships Friday.  She finished with a time of 53.11.

Claxton raced in the first of four heats, and needed to run one of the eight best times of the day to advance to Saturday’s final.  Claxton’s heat featured the top overall qualifier, Kendall Ellis from the University of Southern California, who crossed the line in 51.59.  Also in Claxton’s heat was the third overall qualifier, Sage Watson from Arizona, who finished in 52.09.

"Grace did a great job finishing higher than she was ranked," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives.  "She was the first UAlbany female student-athlete to compete at indoor nationals and she closed out a great collegiate career."

The eighth overall qualifier was Zola Golden from Texas, who finished in 52.67.  Claxton’s personal-best time of 52.64 would have placed seventh in this preliminary round.  By virtue of finishing 12th, Claxton earns All-America Second Team honors.

Claxton’s time as a Great Dane has now come to an end, as she has exhausted her remaining eligibility.  She departs UAlbany having left a significant mark on the program, holding school indoor records in the 400m and 4x400m relay, and outdoor records in the 400m, 400m hurdles, and 4x100m relay.  Additionally, Claxton has won 12 America East event titles, four ECAC event titles, earned NCAA Outdoor Second Team All-America honors, and was the first UAlbany student-athlete to win an event at the Penn Relays.

Tomorrow, senior high jumper Matthew Campbell will compete in his signature event, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern.  Campbell will exhaust his indoor eligibility upon the conclusion of the event, and will not compete again for UAlbany until March 2018 when next year’s outdoor season begins.

ESPN2 will stream the second day of competition starting at 4:55 p.m. Eastern.  A re-air of the championship will take place on Sunday, March 12 starting at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.
