Game One:

The No. 2 ranked UAlbany softball team was tripped up by No. 3 Stony Brook, 4-0, in the squad’s first game of the 2019 America East Tournament on Thursday afternoon. Because of the double-elimination style tournament, the Great Danes move to the elimination bracket.

After a strong start by the Seawolves gave the visitors a four-run lead, Chloe Lewis came out of the bull pen to pitch four scoreless innings and keep the Stony Brook offense at bay.

Five different Great Danes logged hits in the contest, including Amelia Ely who extended her hit streak to seven games with a single in the sixth.

Stony Brook carried a 4-0 lead after a complete three innings. After the Seawolves offense put up a two-spot in the first inning, the visitors then doubled their lead with a pair of runs in the third.

Katie Falotico led off the bottom of the fourth with an outfield single, advanced to second on a ball put in play by Sarah Petzold and made her way to third on a hit from Maranda Jimenez, as the Great Danes loaded the bases with one out. With the Seawolves’ backs against the wall, Melissa Rarich was able to retire the side and keep the defending champions off the board.

UAlbany threatened again with baserunners in the sixth. The home team looked to get a two-out rally rolling after back-to-back singles from Petzold and Amelia Ely put runners into scoring positions but the Great Danes rally was halted by a diving catch from the Seawolves’ shortstop.

Melissa Rarich went the distance for Stony Brook, striking out eight in the shutout.

Game Two:

In a win-or-go home game, it was a four-run sixth inning by the Bearcats that proved to be the difference maker.

UAlbany found itself battling from behind once again following a two-run first inning by the Bearcats.

In the fourth, the Great Danes bounced back with a pair of runs even the score at 2-2. Sarah Petzold drew a lead-off walk but it was Amelia Ely who came up with the timely RBI triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Spear.

The Bearcats retook the lead in the fourth with Mikayla Alverez knocking in a pair of runs with an outfield single. Binghamton added a pair of insurance runs off a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a wild pitch to secure the 6-2 win.

Up Next: The Great Danes conclude the season with a 26-17 record.
