UAlbany Shuts Out #5 Binghamton in AE Tournament

Short Story: The UAlbany softball team won its first game of the America East tournament against #5 Binghamton on Thursday, ending the game with a nine-run lead in the fifth inning.

How It Happened:

Junior pitcher Celeste Verdolivo led the Great Danes to their first win at the America East tournament on Thursday. Verdolivo pitched a shutout game, striking out three batters.

In the first inning, McKenzie Bump and Katie Falotico walked back-to-back. Kelly Spear came up to bat and hit a sacrificial bunt to advance Bump and Falotico to third and second, respectively. Chelsea Henige was hit by a pitch on the next play and advanced to first base. With bases loaded, Sarah Petzold hit a sacrifice groundout that brought McKenzie Bump around to score the first run of the game. 

UAlbany rallied in the second inning, putting six runs up on the board. Kelly Barkevich singled to left field to open the second inning for UAlbany. Amelia Ely followed with a single to right field. Aliyah Wade was then hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases. McKenzie Bump hit an RBI-single to center field that brought Ely around to score the second run for UAlbany. Aliyah Wade scored on the next play off of a wild pitch, which advanced Bump to third and Falotico to second. Kelly Spear went 1-for-1 at bat and hit a three-run homer that brought Bump and Falotico around to score.

Chelsea Henige went 1-for-2 at bat and hit a two-run homer that brought Kelly Spear around to score in the fourth inning. Spear was on first base after a walk. The Great Danes were ahead by nine runs in the fourth inning and kept that lead to end the game in the fifth. The final score was 9-0 UAlbany.

“That was a great start for us in the tournament. Cel pitched another great game and we got some really big clutch hits by Kelly Spear and Chelsea. This is a tough tournament to win because everyone here is so evenly matched. We need to just stay consistent like we have been all year.”
