Short Story: The UAlbany Softball team earned the America East regular season title today after defeating UMass Lowell for the third time in a row to close out the last home series of the season. Seniors Donna Conrad and Devin Durando were honored on the field before the game in celebration of senior day.

How It Happened

Game 1

Senior pitcher Devin Durando opened up gameplay for the Great Danes, pitching five innings with seven strikeouts. Junior pitcher Celeste Verdolivo entered the game in the sixth inning, recording two strikeouts and facing seven batters in two innings.

In the top of the first inning with a UMass Lowell runner on first base, shortstop Amelia Ely got a runner out at second base before throwing to first for a double play to end UMass Lowell’s turn at bat.

In the second inning, Sarah Petzold hit a home run to score the first run of the game. UMass Lowell retaliated in the top of the third, scoring one run and leveling the score.

Katie Falotico hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the third that brought Aliyah Wade, who was on second base, around to score. This put the Great Danes in the lead again by one run.

In the fourth inning with Alexa Corben on first and Sarah Petzold on third, Maranda Jimenez swung at a ball, which caused Corben to run for second. As UMass tried to tag Corben out, Petzold ran home and scored a run for the Great Danes. Corben made it back to first base without being tagged out.

Although UMass Lowell scored a run in the fifth inning, it was not enough to overtake UAlbany. The final score was 3-2.

Comments From Coach Chris Cannata

"All we wanted going into this weekend was a chance to play for first place. I’m proud of our effort against a very good UMass Lowell team. We showed a lot of heart this weekend and it feels great to finish the regular season on top. The conference this year was so evenly matched, and every team is definitely capable of beating anyone.  Now it’s time to refocus and get ready for next week and a challenging conference tournament.”

Next: UAlbany will play in the America East Conference Tournament on Thursday at 11:00 am. The competition will take place at Binghamton University.
