The University at Albany men’s soccer team visited UMBC on Saturday night for the fourth game of the 2017 America East conference schedule.  The Great Danes fell to the Retrievers on UMBC’s Homecoming night 3-1.

For only the second game this season, the Great Danes allowed a first-half goal.  UMBC’s Sammy Kahsai successfully converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute to put the Retrievers on the board 1-0, breaking the scoreless tie.

UAlbany narrowly outshot UMBC 5-4 in the first half, but three of UMBC’s four shots were on target.

Leading 1-0 after halftime, the Retrievers quickly scored another goal shortly after the break to go up 2-0 in the 49th minute.  UAlbany finally broke through in the 59th minute with a point-blank goal by senior forward Afonso Pinheiro, who was set up at the UMBC penalty marker by Reid Conde.

For a time it looked like UAlbany, who had dialed up the pressure after UMBC’s second goal, would come back to tie the game.  But in the 83rd minute UMBC scored a third time to clinch the game 3-1.

Nine of UMBC’s 12 total shots for the game were on target, compared to just three of UAlbany’s 11.

Next: The Great Danes will return to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium for their final two home games of the 2017 regular season on October 20 against Hartford and on October 24 against Hartwick.
