The University at Albany men’s soccer team won its fifth consecutive game Tuesday night, coming back on the road against LIU Brooklyn.  The Blackbirds recorded the first first-half goal for a UAlbany opponent this season, and the Great Danes faced their first halftime deficit since trailing 1-0 at #3 Clemson in the NCAA Sweet 16 last year.

Before the Blackbirds’ goal, UAlbany had outscored its opponents 9-0 in the first half this season.  LIU Brooklyn broke through in the 15th minute on a long pass into the UAlbany box before a successful shot into the corner.

Trailing at halftime, UAlbany faced a shots deficit of 8-3 through the first 45 minutes.  The Great Danes had also not drawn a corner kick, while LIU Brooklyn had drawn two.

UAlbany picked up the intensity in the second half, starting with a goal in the 51st minute.  After clearing the Great Dane defense cleared a corner kick attempt, Nico Solabarrieta received the ball along the right sideline, and broke up the field, jumping over a Blackbird defender.  With a clear path to the goal and another Blackbird moving to cut him off, Solabarrieta attempted to play the ball into the middle of the LIU Brooklyn box.  His ball was deflected by the defender and bounced into the net.

Shortly after the first goal, in the 59th minute, Solabarrieta played a ball forward up the right sideline to Afonso Pinheiro, who had split two defenders.  Pinheiro collected the ball on the right line and turned towards the goal, took two touches, and ripped a shot past the keeper into the left side netting.  The goal would prove to be the game-winner.

UAlbany outshot LIU Brooklyn 8-2 in the second half, earning a narrow edge of 11-10 for the game.  UAlbany goalkeeper, Lucas Vallilo, who made three saves in the first half, earned his fourth win of the season.

Next: UAlbany will return to America East play with a trip to Vermont on Saturday, October 7.
