UAlbany Sports Information   05-20-2017

ORONO, Maine – After winning both games of the doubleheader on Friday, the University at Albany baseball team (24-24, 10-13 AE) fell in the final game of their road series at Maine (21-27, 8-12 AE), and their final game of the regular season.  The Great Danes dropped a close game to the Black Bears by a score of 2-1.

Saturday's series finale went scoreless through the first three and a half innings before Maine jumped onto the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  UAlbany responded with its only run in the top of the fifth.  With one out, Kyle Sacks and Stephen Loreng worked back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second.  After Matt Codispoti flied out to second, Alex Thul earned the Danes' third walk of the inning to load the bases.  Finally, Nick Kondo drew a fourth walk, forcing in Sacks from third.  The Great Danes were unable to capitalize further, and the game ended 2-1 after four more scoreless innings.

Travis Collins led UAlbany with two hits.  Great Dane starter Ray Weber lasted 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.  Brendan Smith, David Hutchison, Charlie Peltz, Angelo Spedafino, and Joe Romero combined for the final 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

UAlbany scored one run on four hits and committed one error.  Maine scored two runs on nine hits.

With the 2017 regular season in the books, Kevin Donati led the team with a .335 average and .516 slugging percentage, starting all 48 games.  He and Collins were the only two players to start all 48 games during the regular season.  Collins led the team in both home runs (10) and RBIs (37).  Connor Powers led the team with a .410 on base percentage.  On the mound, Dominic Savino led the team in wins (5) and ERA (2.60).  Smith led the team in strikeouts (40).

Yesterday, the Great Danes clinched the four-seed in the America East tournament, and will face five-seed Maine in the first game on Wednesday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m.  A victory in Wednesday's game will see UAlbany play an 11:00 a.m. game on Thursday, May 25 against top overall seed Binghamton, while a loss will place the Great Danes in the elimination bracket, which begins with the tournament's first elimination game at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday against the loser of Wednesday's second game between three seed Stony Brook and six-seed Hartford.
