Baseball Falls In Series Rubber Match At UMBC, 9-3

BALTIMORE – After splitting the series-opening doubleheader, the University at Albany baseball team (8-8, 1-2 AE) fell to host UMBC (4-11, 2-1 AE) in the series’ deciding game by a score of 9-3.  With the loss, UAlbany loses its first America East series and falls back to .500 on the season.

The Great Danes found themselves in an early hole, giving up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and four more in the bottom of the second.  The Retrievers would not score again following the second inning.

UAlbany finally got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth behind a sacrifice fly from Kyle Sacks and an RBI single from Evan Harasta.  UAlbany scored for the final time in the top of the eighth when Travis Collins grounded out to second allowing Marc Wangenstein to score from third. 

UAlbany scored three runs on 10 hits with no errors.  UMBC scored nine runs on 14 hits with one error.

Great Dane starter Kenny McLean lasted 1.1 innings, giving up seven runs on six hits with one strikeout and two walks.  David Hutchison pitched 5.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.  Finally, Hunter Torres pitched the final inning of the game, giving up one hit and recording one strikeout.

UAlbany next will play a single game at Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, March 28 before another America East series next weekend at Stony Brook.  Looking further ahead, the Great Danes will host their first home game of the season on Tuesday, April 4 against Marist.
