Men's Basketball To Take Foreign Tour Through Canada

UAlbany Sports Information   08-13-2019

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s basketball program will take a week-long trip to two Canadian cities, during which time they will play exhibition games against five Canadian universities in a foreign tour.

“We are excited about our upcoming trip to Canada,” said head coach Will Brown.  “The trip will give us the opportunity to experience another culture and spend quality time together off the court.  We are looking forward to the sightseeing and learning what Ottawa and Montréal have to offer.  We will play five exhibition games against quality teams.  Three of our scheduled opponents have already beaten NCAA D1 programs this summer.  Carleton has won 14 of the last 17 Canadian National Championships.  Basketball-wise, we are looking to learn as much as we can about our current personnel and team.  We will play many different combinations and try different things offensively and defensively.  This will be a tremendous learning experience for us on and off the court.”

The team departs on Friday, August 16 for Ottawa, where they will spend the weekend.  Saturday, the first full day on the road, will see the Great Danes compete in their first exhibition game, against the University of Ottawa.  Sunday, before playing Carleton University, the Danes will visit the Canadian Parliament building as part of their planned sightseeing excursions.

On Monday, August 19, the team will leave Ottawa and travel to Montréal, where they will spend the remainder of the trip.  Monday evening features a game against McGill University, which will follow a walk through Old Montréal.  Tuesday the Danes will face off against the Université du Québec à Montréal, and on Wednesday the team will conclude their exhibition slate against Concordia.  The team returns to Albany on Thursday, August 22.

The tour will be the second international trip the team has taken in less than a year, having spent a week in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the early part of the 2018-19 season as a participant in the second annual Belfast Classic.

Except for the first game, against the University of Ottawa, which will begin at 8:00 p.m., each game on the tour will tip off at 7:00 p.m.
