ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany field hockey program have added two new recruits for the upcoming 2018 season, head coach Phil Sykes announced Tuesday. Joining the team will be Sheridan Messier and Julia Papanicolaou.

Messier, a goalie from Niskayuna, N.Y., played at Shenendehowa High School, serving as team captain as a senior. She recorded 116 saves and allowed 25 goals with a .823 save percentage. Her varsity career saw her record 26 shutouts, 10 of which came during her senior season. In 2017, Messier earned Section II First Team, All-State, and Times Union First Team honors. During her career, Messier played four three Suburban Council championship teams, two Sectional championship teams, two Regional championship teams, and one state championship team.

Papanicolaou, a defender from Mahopac, N.Y., played at Lakeland High School, where she served as team captain during her senior season. In 22 career games, she scored six goals and recorded 22 assists. She earned All-League and All-Section honors in both 2016 and 2017, as well as All-Region and All-State honors in 2017. During her career, Papanicolaou helped her team win three sectional, regional, and state titles.

"With the additions of Sheridan and Julia to our team our defense gets much deeper,” said Sykes. “Sheridan brings a wealth of experience and will give us two high quality goalies. Julia comes from Hudson Valley where under legendary coach Sharon Sarsen she won the New York State Championship every year of her high school career. Julia has a good hockey brain and will add to our defensive line."

Last season, the UAlbany field hockey team went 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the America East, ultimately falling in the America East semifinal 2-1 in overtime against New Hampshire.
