Albany, N.Y. – Quanitra Hollingworth accumulated 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 67-53 win over UAlbany in women’s basketball non-conference play at SEFCU Arena on Saturday, Nov. 29. Holding just a six-point advantage at halftime, the Rams used a 17-0 run early in the second stanza to pull away.

The Great Danes’ Tiffanie Johnson made a three-point field goal from the top of the arc to open the second half and make it a one-possession game at 28-25. With her team trailing 36-30 just over six minutes into the stanza, the Rams went on their biggest run of the game with 17 unanswered.  Jessica Taylor had nine of her 11 points in that span, before McGee was able to drill one of her four three-pointers at the 7:50 mark. UAlbany (0-6) never recovered from the 53-30 deficit and could only bring the lead down to 14 points the rest of the way.

“We played with heart and pride, but they were too athletic for us,” UAlbany coach Trina Patterson said.  “They came up with too many loose balls and offensive rebounds. Although we shot the ball better (than the last game), we were indecisive.  We need to get the composure of an experienced team and slow down.”

The first half was a seesaw battle which featured four ties and four lead changes. Charity Iromuanya, who finished with eight points and seven rebounds, gave UAlbany its first lead at 7-5 when she converted a fastbreak layup. Janea Aiken gave the Great Danes a 15-14 advantage when she cut through the VCU defense and converted a layup, but VCU (4-1) scored the next five points and never trailed the rest of the game.

McGee fell just short of a double-double, recording 15 points and nine assists, one off her career-best total, to pace the Great Danes, who were playing their fourth game against an opponent which advanced to either the NCAA or WNIT last season. Johnson totaled 10 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Adrienne Jones scored nine, the first points of her career. In addition to posting season highs for points and rebounds, Iromuanya had three picks.

“We were out of sync at one point in the second half and made some bad decisions by the older players,” explained McGee, a junior guard who added four steals.  “We came out with energy and were ready to play.  Now we need to carry that over to the second half.  These early games have exposed everything we need to work on, so everyone’s head is high.”

VCU, which was narrowly outshot from the field by UAlbany, held a 16-point advantage from the charity stripe. In addition to Hollingsworth’s double-double, La’Tavia Rorie, and Kita Waller each scored in double figures with 11 points apiece. Taylor had four steals, while Rorie brought down seven boards.

UAlbany, which is winless through six games for the first time since the 2000-01 season, will host Detroit on Monday at 5 p.m.
