NEW ORLEANS – One day after earning All-Northeast Region honors, University at Albany senior Hannah Reinhardt has been named Northeast Region Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Reinhardt won the women’s 6K at the NCAA Northeast Regional XC Championships in Buffalo last Friday, crossing the finish line in 19:28.4, three seconds clear of runner-up Anna Juul from Harvard. Reinhardt’s victory earned her an automatic qualifying bid to this weekend’s NCAA XC Championships.
The Athlete of the Year honor is the latest in Reinhardt’s stellar run. Beginning at the start of the 2018 cross country season, Reinhardt has won two America East individual titles and a conference record eight Performer of the Week awards. She has set UAlbany school records at both 5K and 6K, and has set the current and overall UAlbany home course records with her latest America East title. Of her 12 races in the last two seasons, Reinhardt has won eight.
Named alongside Reinhardt in the Northeast’s major awards were Hofstra’s Alex Masai, men’s Athlete of the Year, and Harvard’s Alex Gibby, men’s and women’s Coach of the Year.
This season, Reinhardt has lowered her personal-best in the 5K by nine seconds and in the 6K by one minute and 11 seconds. She is just the second Great Dane ever, behind Silvia Del Fava in 2013, to qualify for DI NCAA XC Championships.
Reinhardt’s race begins Saturday, November 23 at 11:15 a.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
