Men's Soccer Announces 2019 Recruits

ALBANY, N.Y. - University at Albany men’s soccer head coach Trevor Gorman has announced the addition of 13 players to the Great Danes’ squad for 2019.  The class features players from six countries, as well as five from New York State.

 

“We are looking forward to the 2019 season, and to adding these players to our squad,” said Gorman.  “It’s a group with a lot of talent and experience. We are excited to combine with our returning players and to see the evolution of our team.”

 

The new recruits will join a program that has won the America East regular season or tournament title three times in the last four seasons, and has advanced to eight-straight America East Tournaments.  This year’s team will return 10 letter-winners from last season.

 

Austin DaSilva: F – 6’0 – 165lbs. – Brookfield, Conn. (University of Connecticut)

 

Quick Facts: DaSilva joins the Great Danes having previously competed for one season at UCONN. As a freshman, he contributed 2 goals and 3 assists. Prior to UCONN, DaSilva was a multi-sport athlete at Brookfield High School. In addition to leading his high school team as captain, DaSilva was also a member of the Beachside Soccer Club in the US Soccer Development Academy & was named conference player of the year in 2016-2017.

 

Gorman on DaSilva: “Austin is an athletic, attacking, player who thrives on competition. Since he joined us in January he’s proven to be an excellent addition to our team. We’re looking forward to seeing his impact this fall”

 

Eli Donofio: D – 5’9 – 155lbs. – Rotterdam, N.Y. (Christian Brothers Academy)

 

Quick Facts: A local product, Donofrio was a Section 2 Suburban Council All-Star in 2018 while helping his CBA squad claim their first even section title. He has also been a member of the Region 1 Olympic Development Program team while playing his club soccer for Blackwatch Premier.

 

Gorman on Donofrio: “Eli is a talented, left-footed, player who has experience in multiple positions. He’s familiar with our program and looking forward to continuing his career close to home. We feel he has the potential for an excellent career as a Great Dane”

 

Anton Friberg: M – 5’11 – 170lbs. – Falkenberg, Sweden

 

Quick Facts: Friberg comes to UAlbany with plenty of experience in his home country. He has grown up a part of well-known clubs Kalmar, IFK, & Falkenbergs over the years. Friberg was selected to participate in youth national team camps and represented his country at the youth level multiple times.

 

Gorman on Friberg: “Anton is an experience midfield player who comes from an excellent background. He’s competed at a good standard in Sweden and is eager to continue his career at UAlbany. We’re looking forward to welcoming him this fall.”

 

Henrik Gauksheim: D – 6’2 – 185lbs. – Bergen, Norway

 

Quick Facts: A mid-year addition to the squad, Gauksheim grew up spending time, and playing, in Norwary, New Zealand, & Singapore. He joins the Great Danes as a versatile player capable of playing in defense or midfield.

 

Gorman on Gauksheim: “Henrik is another guy who was with us in the spring semester. He is composed on the ball, reads the game well, and strong in his positioning. He has fit in with our group very well and we’re looking forward to his first fall season.”

 

Isac Hjerten: GK – 6’2 – 185lbs. – Ulricehamn, Sweden

 

Quick Facts: The second new Great Dane from Sweden, Hjerten most recently played with Tvååkers IF in his native Sweden. Prior to that, he was a youth member of IFK Goteborg participating in the highest youth league in Sweden.

 

Gorman on Hjerten: “Isac is an experienced, athletic, goalkeeper we are excited to add. He has competed at a good level and has a maturity to his play. He’s looking forward to continuing his career in the United States and will be an outstanding addition to our program.”

 

Micheal Kennedy: GK – 6’5 – 190lbs. – Yonkers, N.Y. (Manhattan College)

 

Quick Facts: Kennedy comes to UAlbany after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Manhattan. With the Jaspers, he appeared in three games last season and recorded his first career shutout against Siena. Prior to Manhattan, Kennedy was a standout member of Fordham Prep. As a senior, he led his team to a 19-1 record with 13 shutouts and a 0.45 GAA.

 

Gorman on Kennedy: “Micheal is another goalkeeper with Division 1 experience from his time at Manhattan. Since joining us in the spring he’s shown a fantastic work ethic and dedication to training. In addition to his Manhattan experience, he’s played multiple summer seasons in USL 2 and brings all of that with him to our squad.”

 

Bjarki Leósson: D – 6’2 – 180lbs – Reykjavík, Iceland

 

Quick Facts: Leósson has played for Icelandic clubs KR & Grotta throughout his youth career. Additionally, he was a member of youth national team camps at multiple age groups.

 

Gorman on Leósson: “Bjarki is a strong, experienced, left-footed defender who will immediately add quality to our left side. He’s played at a strong level in Iceland and will fit in well alongside our returning defenders.”

 

Guillermo Mijancos: F – 6’0 – 160lbs. – Palma de Mallorca, Spain

 

Quick Facts: The Great Danes first Spanish player, Mijancos has played for Penya Arrabal in the Spanish U19 Division de Honor – the top youth league in Spain.

 

Gorman on Mijancos: “Guille is an exciting attacking player. He can play multiple roles in the attack, has experience at a good level, and will be a dynamic, creative, player for us. We are looking forward to his development here at UAlbany.”

 

Benny Pierson: D – 5’11 – 175lbs. – Schenectady, N.Y. (Schalmont HS)

 

Quick Facts: The second local player in the class, Pierson comes to UAlbany from nearby Schalmont HS while playing his club soccer for Oakwood SC in the US Soccer Development Academy.

 

Gorman on Pierson: “Benny is an athletic, strong, defender who’s done very well with the Oakwood program over the years. We believe he has the potential to do very well in the America East and look forward to his growth in our program.”

 

Bjarki Ragnar: F – 6’2 – 185lbs. – Reykjavik, Iceland (Loyola Marymount)

 

Quick Facts: Ragnar comes to UAlbany after spending last season with Loyola Marymount. He made six starts in 17 appearances, tallying one goal. Prior to Loyola, Ragnar was a member of Fylkir in Iceland.

 

Gorman on Ragnar: “Bjarki is a big, powerful, forward who is a handful for defenders. He’s gained experience at the Division 1 level last season and we’re thrilled he’ll bring that experience to our team this season.”

 

Erick Reuter: M – 5’11 – 175lbs. – Smithtown, N.Y. (Smithtown West HS)

 

Quick Facts: Reuter comes to the Great Danes fresh off an outstanding high school career at Smithtown West. As a captain in 2018 he led Smithtown to their first undefeated season in school history. Reuter played his club soccer for Smithtown Chelsea.

 

Gorman on Reuter: “Erick is a strong, athletic, player who was a multi-sport athlete in high school. He enjoys the battles on the field and has the personality to succeed in them. We’re looking forward to his development as a Great Dane.”

 

Niklas Roessler: M – 5’11 – 170lbs. – Stuttgart, Germany (Salem University)

 

Quick Facts: Roessler comes to UAlbany after spending two seasons with Salem University. He also competed with Med City FC in the NPSL summer league, being named to the Midwest All Region XI in 2018.

 

Gorman on Roessler: “Niklas is an experience player with the ability to do a number of things on the field. He can provide the creative pass as well as solidify the middle of the field. We’re looking forward to his contribution.”

 

Andrew Weiner: F – 6’0 – 180lbs. – Bellmore, N.Y. (Mepham HS)

 

Quick Facts: A high school All-American in 2018, Weiner led Mepham High School to their first even Nassau County Championship. Also a member of the Region 1 Olympic Development team, he played club soccer for the Levittown Gunners – twice advancing to the Region 1 Championships.

 

Gorman on Weiner: “Andrew is an exciting attacking player. He is a threat on and off the ball in the final third and loves putting himself in dangerous positions around the box. Andrew has a great work rate and we look forward to seeing him in action for UAlbany.”
