Savino Named Pitcher of the Week

UAlbany Sports Information   05-13-2019

BOSTON – For the first time this season, University at Albany senior Dominic Savino has been named America East Pitcher of the Week, the conference offices announced Monday.  He was named alongside Co-Players of the Week Oscar Marchena from UMass Lowell and Chris Hamilton from Stony Brook, and Rookie of the Week Ryan Turenne from Maine.

Savino, a righty from Smithtown, N.Y., pitched a complete-game in the series opener against Binghamton on Saturday.  He allowed one run, unearned, on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks.  Savino threw 102 pitches in the game, and outdueled 2017 America East Pitcher of the Year Nick Gallagher.  He retired the first six and last 11 batters he faced.

Savino has now won each of his last three starts after starting the season 0-4.  He leads the team with 65.2 innings pitched and 52 strikeouts, and ranks second behind closer Joe Kruszka with a 2.88 ERA.  Within the America East, Savino ranks second in opposing batting average, third in ERA, fourth in runs allowed, and eighth in strikeouts.

UAlbany has now won five straight and sits third in the America East standings, narrowly behind second-place Binghamton and a first-round bye in the America East Tournament.  The Great Danes return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Sacred Heart before hosting Hartford this weekend to close the regular season.
