Short Story:  The University at Albany women's basketball team will continue its America East title run after defeating Binghamton, 61-56, on Wednesday evening at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes erased a late seven-point deficit on their way to a thrilling quarterfinal win.

This win shows ourselves, our fans and anyone watching how far this team has come since the beginning of the season. We showed extreme toughness tonight. I challenged the team during a timeout in the third quarter, when we were down, to not play scared and to play with everything they had. All the credit to Binghamton, they played great tonight. They had a great game plan and executed it will, they gave us everything they had.”

  • Alexi Schecter led all Great Danes with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
  • Kyara Frames added to the offense with 12 points and three steals, while Chyanna Canada chipped in with 12 points of her own.
  • Binghamton’s Rebecca Carmody notched a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds.
  • The Bearcats won the battle of the boards, 40-33.
  • UAlbany assisted on 14 of their 23 field goals.
  • Canada (12 points) and Patricia Conroy (9 points) accounted for all 21 of the Great Danes’ bench points.

Recap: In a game that featured five lead changes in the second half, the fourth-seeded Great Danes were able to take the lead for good inside the final minute to earn a 61-56 victory against No. 5 Binghamton in the America East Quarterfinals.


Down seven, 54-47, Alexi Schecter dug in and tallied buckets on the Great Danes’ next two possessions to spark a 9-2 run gave the squad a one-point lead, 55-54. The score would sway back in favor of the Bearcats on the next possession, but a pair of free throws from Amanda Kantzy would give UAlbany the lead for good.


Schecter later solidified the win, knocking down a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game, 61-56, with four seconds to play.


With the victory, the Great Danes advance to their seventh-consecutive America East Semifinal game. UAlbany will square off against top-seeded Maine on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m. in Orono, Maine.


UAlbany worked to create an eight-point buffer half way through opening stanza, although Binghamton would use a stretch of eight unanswered points to tie the score 18-18.


The Great Danes maintained at least a two-point advantage in the second quarter. A three-pointer by Conroy put the home team up four points, but the Bearcats hit a triple inside the last 30 seconds to cut the different to one. UAlbany would hold onto the lead and enter the locker room up 31-30.


Binghamton began the third quarter on a 10-2, earning its biggest lead of the game, 42-33, at 3:56.


Down nine, the Great Danes began to chip away at their opponents lead. Frames and Canada connected on a pair of jumpers before Khepera Stokes cut the difference to five points on a fast break lay up.


The back-and-forth battle continued, as UAlbany pulled in front once again scoring six straight points. Binghamton would tie the score 55-55, but the Great Danes would knock down six of their final eight free throws to solidify the win. 


Up Next: No. 5 UAlbany will visit No. 1 Maine for a semifinal matchup on Sunday, March 10 in Orono, Maine. Tip-off is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
