Strong Defensive Performance Leads UAlbany Over Vermont, 65-40

Short Story: The University at Albany put on a defensive clinic on Saturday afternoon, holding visiting Vermont to just 40 points. The 40 points allowed are the second lowest since the Great Danes held Hartford to just 39 points during the 2015-16 season.

Alexi Schecter (17 points) and Kyara Frames (15) each notched double-figures in scoring.

UAlbany improves to 23-19 in the all-time series.

The Great Danes won the battle of the boards, 44-28.

The 27 field goals by UAlbany tie a season high.

 

Recap: UAlbany notched its 10th win of the season with a 65-40 rout of Vermont on Saturday afternoon. The Great Danes (10-13, 7-3 AE) improve to 5-0 at home against America East opponents.

 

Kyara Frames who finished with a personal-best 10 rebounds added 15 points on the offensive end, earning her first career double-double. Alexi Schecter paced all players with 17 points and four assists.

 

The offense was on fire all night for UAlbany, which went 27-61 overall from the floor, while scoring an impressive 36 points in the paint. The Great Danes are 7-1 this season when totaling 30+ points from inside the key.

 

UAlbany, which posted its third consecutive victory, dominated in all aspect of the contest, winning the rebounding battle, 44-28, while assisting on 17 of its 27 field goals.

 

As much as the focus was on the offense, the Great Danes were also impressive on the defensive end, forcing 12 turnovers and limited the Catamounts to 14 field goals and just five first quarter points.

 

UAlbany held Vermont scoreless over the opening three minutes, rushing out to a 9-0 lead on six points from Schecter.

 

The Great Danes, who held a 13-point edge after one, put together an 9-2 run midway through in the second to build a 29-7 advantage. Khepera Stokes joined the scoring attack with a layup to the start the run before Amanda Kantzy and Frames buried a pair of triples to put UAlbany up by 22. Stokes would pick up her sixth and seventh points, respectively, in the frame connecting on a pair of free throws to give UAlbany a 36-10 lead after two quarters.

 

The lead grew to 31 in the third when Chyanna Canada knocked one down in the middle of a 11-4 run. Patricia Conroy’s layup with 2:10 left in the third gave UAlbany its largest lead of the game at 48-16.

 

Vermont would cut the difference to 26 points, 50-24, but it would be as close as it would get. The Great Danes immediately answered with an 8-2 run with Frame’s three pointer extending the advantage back to 32.

Julie Ford and Lucia Decortes would add to the score with buckets of their own, as the Great Danes cruised to a 65-40 victory.

 

Up Next: The Great Danes hit the road for a midweek match up at UMass Lowell on Wednesday, February 13. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.
