Men's Basketball Falls at Yale 71-63

UAlbany Sports Information   12-11-2018

Score: Yale 71, UAlbany 63

Location: John J. Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn.

Records: UAlbany (3-7); Yale (5-3)

Short Story: UAlbany starts fast but comes up short at Yale, 71-63.

Coach Brown:  “I think in the first half Ahmad getting in foul trouble hurt us, and our transition defense was poor.  Our half-court defense in the first half was solid, but I thought we gave up too many easy opportunities in transition.  This team isn’t built to play without Ahmad.  We made a bit of a run in the second half, but our half-court defense let us down.  We’re getting very limited production from our bench, and I think it’s putting too much pressure on the guys playing heavy minutes.”

Recap

After snapping a four-game skid, the program's longest in eight seasons, the University at Albany men's basketball team was at it again Tuesday night, visiting Ivy League opponent Yale.  Despite opening both the first and second half strongly, the Great Danes couldn't capitalize on their early momentum and fell to the Bulldogs 71-63.

UAlbany opened the game on a quick 5-0 run before the first minute had elapsed.  Yale missed its first seven shots of the game, including four from behind the arc, allowing UAlbany to open up a 7-0 lead over the first four minutes.  Yale finally scored with 15:10 remaining with a one of two free throws to cut the Great Dane lead to 7-1.

The Bulldogs rode a hot shooting streak, hitting six of seven shots, to cut UAlbany’s lead to 16-14 with 7:43 left in the first half.  Yale tied the game at 18 with 6:03 remaining, and took its first lead 23 seconds of game time later.

Yale built a nine-point lead on a 13-0 run lasting more than three minutes.  The Bulldogs’ run coincided with a four-plus minute scoring drought for the Great Danes, who had missed their previous six shots.

Ahmad Clark ended UAlbany’s drought with a contested layup to bring the Danes within seven with just under three minutes to play in the first half.  Yale responded immediately with a layup on their ensuing possession.

Yale entered halftime leading by 10, 32-22, after trailing by as many as eight early in the game.  Clark led UAlbany at the break with five points, but only played nine minutes after committing two early fouls.  As a team, UAlbany shot just 2-12 from three in the first 20 minutes.  Further, the Danes only took two free throws in the first half, after taking more than 20 in each of their previous three games.

UAlbany scored four quick points to open the second half, cutting Yale’s lead to six.  The Danes cut the lead to two with 17:42 left before Yale broke UAlbany’s 9-1 opening run.

With 16:12 left on the clock, Cameron Healy hit his first three-pointer of the game.  Healy had hit three or more threes in each of his last five games.

Yale opened up another 10-point lead with 12:35 left in the second, riding a stretch of 6-8 shooting.  Devonte Campbell drew three free throws with 7:57 left, successfully converting all three to bring UAlbany within seven.

With 5:27 left, Yale opened up its largest lead of the night to that point, 14 points.  UAlbany had not score in nearly three minutes, while Yale had pushed a 7-0 run.  Campbell hit one of two free throws to stifle Yale’s run, bringing UAlbany within 62-49.

Yale continued to pull away, building a 16-point lead before claiming victory by eight, 71-63, thanks to back-to-back threes from Antonio Rizzuto.  Healy led the Great Danes with 15 points, leading four Great Danes in double figures on the evening.  UAlbany shot 9-11 from the free throw line in the second half, and held Yale to 29% shooting from three for the game.

Next: UAlbany returns to SEFCU Arena on Saturday, December 15 to host a rematch with Dartmouth.
