Women's Soccer Takes on USF In NCAA First Round

UAlbany Sports Information   11-08-2018

ALBANY, N.Y. – Winners of their third America East title in the last four years, the University at Albany women’s soccer team will make its latest berth into the NCAA Tournament on Saturday when they visit the University of South Florida.

UAlbany (14-6-2, 5-2-1 AE) defeated UMass Lowell 5-1 in the America East title game to claim the third conference championship for the 2018-19 senior class.  The five goals scored in the game is the most by a participating team in the conference championship since Hartford scored eight in 1997, before UAlbany was a member institution.

The Great Danes broke open the game early, with 2018 America East Rookie of the Year Jada Colbert finding the back of the net after just 43 seconds.  In the 20th minute, Jasmine Colbert put UAlbany up 2-0.  America East Striker of the Year Mariah Williams, who took seven of UAlbany’s 12 first-half shots, assisted on both goals.

UAlbany added three goals following the halftime break.  UMass Lowell did notch one goal in the game, ending the Danes’ streak of five-consecutive shutout victories.  Despite the shutout streak ending, UAlbany has now won six straight games and have outscored opponents 15-1.  The Great Dane defense also put on a performance, holding UMass Lowell to just one shot in the first half, and to just two shots on goal for the whole game.

The Great Danes previously appeared in the NCAA Tournament following their league titles in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.  They lost in 2015 to tournament six-seed Penn State 5-0 and in 2016 lost to Connecticut 4-2.  In both of those seasons, the team matched a program-record 11 victories.  This year’s team broke that record in quarterfinal round.

South Florida won the American Athletic Conference regular season title, but fell in the title game to Memphis.  The Bulls have 14 victories this season, and currently rank 20th in the national coaches’ poll.  South Florida will be making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last five seasons, and will be hosting an opening round game for the fourth time in program history.

The Bulls won six if their first seven games to open the season.  Over the course of the season, they have notched victories over ranked opponents Baylor and Memphis.

The winner of the game between UAlbany and South Florida will advance to the Second Round to be played on November 16 against the winner of one-seed Florida State and Loyola-Chicago.
