Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Spartan Invitational

Short Story: The UAlbany volleyball team split a pair of decisions on the final day of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational on Saturday night. After falling to Western Michigan in straight sets to begin the day, the Great Danes bounced back to sweep the Vipers in their final match of the tournament. UAlbany posted a 1-2 mark on the weekend.
Notables: Akuabata Okenwa was named to the all-tournament team. This is her third all-tournament honor of the season.
Key Stats:
- Akuabata Okenwa finished the day with a team-best 21 kills. Her best performance of the tournament came against UAB as she hit .400 and added 15 kills against.
- As a team, Western Michigan hit .266 while holding UAlbany to just .040. The Broncos Meredith Phillips was the only play to earn double-digit kills with 12.
- UAlbany hit .397 in against UAB. The squad and posted a .526 clip in the first set of the match while limiting their opponents to a -.120 mark.
- Chloe Evering went 10-16 on the attack against UAB, topping off her performance with a .600 hitting percentage.
Notables:
- Andersen Vaughan earned her first collegiate start against UAB. She recorded a career-high 32 assists, six digs and three kills.
- Dominique Fisher started her first collegiate game against the Vipers. She posted two kills and had one block in the mach.
Back in Action: UAlbany opens the season at home on Sunday, Sept. 23 against instate foe Siena. Tilt is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and will be played at University Gym. Admission to the match is free.
