Recap

The University at Albany football team’s three fourth-quarter touchdowns weren’t enough to complete a comeback against Rhode Island on Saturday in a 45-26 loss at Meade Stadium in Kingston, R.I.

Karl Mofor ran for a pair of touchdowns and Vincent Testaverde threw for a TD, plus scored another, in the Great Danes’ Colonial Athletic Association opener.

But Rhode Island, which was receiving votes in Top 25 polls this past week after opening the season with a win over No. 15 Delaware, got four touchdown passes from JaJuan Lawson on its way to a 37-7 lead at halftime and 45-7 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

UAlbany got its first fourth-quarter score when Mofor motored down the right sideline and eluded three defenders for a 40-yard TD.

Five minutes later, Testaverde finished off an eight-play drive by plunging for a touchdown from the 1-yard line, cutting the lead to 45-20.

Mofor, who finished with 52 yards on 10 carries, added a 24-yard touchdown run with 4:24 left in the game.

The Great Danes had fallen behind early when Rhode Island scored on its first drive of the game. But UAlbany answered quickly.

Testaverde, who completed 21-of-32 passes for 228 yards, led an 11-play, 70-yard march that culminated with his 9-yard touchdown strike to Jerah Reeves, tying the game at 7.
