Quote

Head Coach Greg Gattuso: “I thought we settled in, played a lot better as the game progressed, started making more plays and got a few turnovers. Offensively, we moved the ball, had people open. I thought Vincent played a good football game. … All in all, the first thing for me is effort, heart, and I thought we played hard.”

Recap

Freshman wide receiver Dev Holmes caught a touchdown and Vince Testaverde threw his first career TD pass, but the Univesity at Albany football team lost its season opener, 33-7, to Pittsburgh on Saturday at Heinz Field.

Facing an Atlantic Coast Conference foe and playing in the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, UAlbany posted 323 yards of total offense. Holmes, from Troy, N.Y., caught nine passes for 148 yards in his debut, and Testaverde completed 18 of 29 attempts for 263 yards in making his first start for the Great Danes.

Neven Sussman, in his first career start at linebacker, also had an interception in the second half, corralling the ball after Antoine White had tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage.

UAlbany held Pitt, whose season finale of 2017 was a victory over No. 2-ranked Miami (Fla.), scoreless for the second half.

The Great Danes fell in a hole on the opening kickoff after Pitt’s Maurice Ffrench returned it 91 yards for a touchdown.

An interception on UAlbany’s next possession set up Panthers’ quarterback Kenny Pickett’s 5-yard touchdown run, and Pitt’s lead stretched to 19-0 when Ffrench finished a 75-yard drive with a 9-yard TD run.

But the UAlbany offense answered before the end of the first quarter. Testaverde threw his first collegiate touchdown pass, threading the ball to freshman Dev Holmes from 9 yards away to cut the Panthers’ lead to 19-7.

Pitt took a 33-7 lead to halftime after Rafael Araujo-Lopes caught a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter.

Neither team scored in the second half.
