Men's Soccer Announces 2018 Recruits

ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany men’s soccer coach Trevor Gorman has announced the addition of twelve players to the Great Danes squad for 2018. The class features players from five countries, and five from New York State.

“We are excited to add these young men to our UAlbany program” Gorman said. “This group possesses a lot of quality and has the potential to make an immediate impact. We look forward to adding these players to our returning core and building our new squad.”

The new additions will join a program that has won the last two America East titles, and has advanced to the second round of the last two NCAA Tournaments.

Panayiotis Andreou: M – 5’6” – 150lbs – Nicosia, Cyprus

Quick Facts: A member of the U17 and U19 Cypriot national teams, Andreou joins fellow countryman Andreas Assiotis in UAlbany’s recent line of Cypriot players.

Gorman on Andreou: “Pana is a strong, aggressive, player who can control a midfield. He has a great work rate and ability to make players around him better. We’re excited to add his qualities to the team this fall.”

Alex Bourgeois: D – 6’4” – 185lbs – Hastings, N.Y. (Hastings on Hudson HS)

Quick Facts: Bourgeois arrives at UAlbany following a stellar high school career with Hastings High School. At Hastings, he was a 2017 High School All-American, two-time All-State selection, and three-time All-League honoree leading his team to two sectional championships. He played club soccer for the New York Surf Golden Touch Academy.

Gorman on Bourgeois: “Alex is a big, athletic, defender who’s had success at every level. He has the defender’s mentality of enjoying the challenge of going up against top attackers. We look forward to seeing him reach his potential.”

Mouhamed Diop: D – 6’3” – 185lbs – Manhattan, N.Y. (SUNY Cobleskill)

Quick Facts: Diop joins the Great Danes after two seasons at SUNY Cobleskill. He was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. Prior to Cobleskill, Diop attended Manhattan International High School and played for the New York Fusion Soccer Club.

Gorman on Diop: “Mouhamed is a strong, athletic, player with good collegiate experience already. He’s a player we’re excited to add to the group and to see how he fits in with our other defensive options.” 

Leo Gama: D – 6’0” – 155lbs – Salvador, Brazil (Montverde Academy)

Quick Facts: Gama graduated from Montverde Academy in Orlando, Florida after growing up in Salvador, Brazil. While at Montverde, he competed on teams that won the Disney Soccer Showcase and the FC Mast Showcase. Gama was also named to the Winter 2018 High School All-America Watch List.

Gorman on Gama: “Leo is a versatile player capable of multiple roles. He comes from an excellent environment at Montverde and will arrive well prepared for Division I soccer. We are eager to see his impact on our UAlbany program in the coming seasons.”

Hugo Guerra: F – 5’8” – 145lbs – Brewster, N.Y. (Brewster HS)

Quick Facts: A January enrollee, Guerra previously competed for the FC Westchester Academy in the USSDA.

Gorman on Guerra: “Hugo joined us this past spring and had an excellent first semester with the program. He’s dynamic on and off the ball, has creative instincts, and is always causing problems for defenders. We’re looking forward to his first fall season.”

Konstantinos Louvaris: M – 5’8” – 165lbs – Nicosia, Cyprus (Coastal Carolina)

Quick Facts: Louvaris comes to UAlbany after previously playing at Coastal Carolina University. In 2018, he appeared in 18 games for a Chanticleer team that won the Sun Belt championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Prior to coming to the United States, Louvaris was a member of the U17 and U19 Cypriot youth national teams.

Gorman on Louvaris: “Konstantinos is another experienced player who will immediately impact us. He is a box-to-box midfielder who can both link play and create in the final third. We are looking forward to welcoming him to Great Dane family.”

Nabil Milani: GK – 6’2” – 175lbs – Vienna, Va. (UNC-Asheville)

Quick Facts: A former member of the Loudoun Soccer Club in Virginia, Milani joins the Great Danes after a year at UNC-Asheville where he started eight games as a freshman and recorded 30 saves. Prior to college, Milani’s Loudoun team was a two time Virginia State Cup champion and advanced to the national championship game in 2016.

Gorman on Milani: “Nabil is a talented goalkeeper we are looking forward to working with. He was a part of a high achieving club team, and logged valuable Division I minutes last season. His energy, work rate, and desire to get better will make him a valuable part of our goalkeeping crew.” 

Brandon Mimas: F – 6’1” – 175lbs – Baldwinsville, N.Y. (C.W. Baker HS)

Quick Facts: A three-sport athlete, Mimas comes to the Great Danes from C.W. Baker High School where he was named a 2017 United Soccer Coaches High School All-American. Additionally he was named an All-State selection in both his junior and senior year. Mimas was also a three-time letter winner in lacrosse and a two-time letter winner in basketball. He played club soccer for the Syracuse Development Academy.

Gorman on Mimas: “Brandon is player who we identified at our ID camps and impressed on us his desire to be a Great Dane. He’s been a tremendous, multi-sport, athlete throughout his high school years and we look forward to seeing his growth continue with us.” 

Carlos Morehouse: GK – 6’0” – 165lbs – Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius Prep)

Quick Facts: Morehouse comes to UAlbany as a member of the FC United Academy in the USSDA. As a goalkeeper, he helped his team qualify for the 2016 USSDA playoffs. A graduate of Saint Ignatius College Prep, Morehouse comes from a family with Division I athletic history – his mother, Tammy, was a swimmer at Rice from 1986-1989

Gorman on Morehouse: “Carlos is a technical, hard-working, goalkeeper we’re excited to add. He’s competed in the US Development Academy week in and week out and is looking forward to transitioning to Division I. Along with Nabil and Danny (Vitiello) he will help make up an excellent goalkeeping unit.” 

Sam Philip: D – 6’1” – 170lbs – Christchurch, New Zealand

Quick Facts: Philip comes to UAlbany as the latest member of the New Zealand pipeline. He is currently a member of the New Zealand U20 pool seeking to qualify for the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup. A member of the Wellington Phoenix club, Philip has served as a youth team captain and helped lead his squads to multiple tournament successes.

Gorman on Philip: “Sam is a player with great experience in the New Zealand youth national team pools. He’s a composed, athletic, player equally comfortable going forward as he is defending. He can play a number of positions and brings a great desire to get better. We’re excited to welcome him as our latest Kiwi here at UAlbany.”

Gino Rossi: D – 6’0” – 175lbs – Schenectady, NY (Virginia Tech)

Quick Facts: Rossi joins the Great Danes after a three-year playing career at Virginia Tech. A four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Rossi also played a key role on the field making 42 appearances for a team that advanced to the NCAA tournament in both 2016 and 2017. Prior to his time with the Hokies, Rossi was a four-year starter at Schalmont High School where he was named All-State in both his junior and senior years.

Gorman on Rossi: “It’s great to welcome Gino home to the capital region. After an outstanding career at Virginia Tech, he will begin his Masters degree here at UAlbany while competing in front of family and friends. Gino brings his competiveness, attitude, and winning mentality to our program right away and will be a great addition.”

Hafliði Sigurðarson: M – 5’10” – 165lbs – Reykjavík, Iceland

Quick Facts: Sigurðarson joins the Great Danes as a former member of the Icelandic U21 pool. He was an important member of the Fylkir FC youth teams over the years and was named the U19 Player of the Year for the club.

Gorman on Sigurðarson: “Hafliði is a player who will add experience, toughness, and creativity right away. He’s competed at a good standard in Iceland for a number of years and will fit in to our mentality here very well.”
