ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s basketball team has earned a berth into the 2018 Postseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament and will face the University of Pennsylvania in the first round on Friday, March 16. Tipoff for the game, which will be played in Philadelphia, will be announced Tuesday.
“We are looking forward to extending this season and play in the WNIT,” said head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee. Penn is a well-rounded team and it should be a good matchup.”
The Great Danes, who are making their first-ever WNIT appearance, have accumulated a 24-7 record this season, going 12-4 in the America East to earn their second straight two-seed in the America East Tournament. After dispatching Vermont in the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year, UAlbany fell in the final seconds to a Hartford team that handed them their conference opening loss on January 3. The Hawks’ victory in the semifinals snapped UAlbany’s record streaks of 18 straight America East Tournament victories and six straight America East titles.
Penn has gone 21-10 this season including 11-3 in the Ivy League. The Quakers defeated Harvard to advance to the Ivy League title game where they fell to Princeton by 29 points. UAlbany is 0-1 lifetime against Penn, with the only meeting between the two teams coming in 2001.
