Interim head coach Jessica Davos: "We're young and inexperienced, and we continue to struggle early on in games. Too many mistakes on both sides of the ball in the first half, and Dartmouth deserves credit for capitalizing on our errors. We played a strong second half, and I'm happy with the effort we had from the defense and Erin Leghart in net. We have another quick turnaround, heading to Bucknell on Saturday, and I'm hopeful we can carry some momentum into that game."
The University at Albany’s second-half comeback, led by three goals from freshman Kendra Harbinger, wasn’t enough to overcome Dartmouth in a 12-8 women’s lacrosse defeat Wednesday at Casey Stadium.
The Great Danes trailed by seven at halftime before climbing back to within 11-8 on Kaylee Rickert’s goal with about five minutes to play.
But a potential goal that would have cut the lead to just two was called off because of an illegal stick, and Dartmouth’s Ellie Carson, who finished with six goals, closed out the scoring moments later, ending the Great Danes’ comeback bid.
Playing their first game at Casey Stadium after three consecutive road games to start the season, UAlbany also got goals from Emma Powlin, Kaylee Rickert, Paige Werlau, Kyla Zapolski and Madison Conway.
Sam Tortora picked up two assists for UAlbany.
Dartmouth struck first, scoring two goals within a span of 17 seconds to take a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes. But Zapolski and Werlau answered to even the score at 2 with 20 minutes to play in the first half.
The Big Green then ran off seven consecutive goals over the next 20 minutes, leaving the Great Danes facing a 9-2 halftime deficit.
Conway and Powlin started the comeback, with the latter scoring on a free-position shot with about 23 minutes to play to narrow Dartmouth’s lead to 9-4.
After a Dartmouth goal pushed the lead back to six, Harbinger scored three of the game’s next four goals, all coming on free-position shots. Her third, with 12:10 to play, made the score 11-7.
UAlbany travels to Bucknell for a noon draw Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.
