Recap: The #2/2 UAlbany men’s lacrosse team used a dominant first half to win its home opener vs. Drexel 18-5 and improve to 2-0 on the season.

UAlbany began the game with four goals before Drexel got possession, off TD Ierlan’s faceoff victories.  Connor Fields faked out two defenders and scored on the doorstep to put UAlbany on the board, then he found Tehoka Nanticoke for the catch and shoot from behind the cage.  Jakob Patterson scored on a run from the near side, then Justin Reh scored straight away from a pass from Fields for the 4-0 UAlbany lead 3:12 in.

UAlbany tacked on two more goals, including a nifty behind the back shot by Fields with two defenders next to him, then another catch and shoot from him to Reh.  The Great Danes led 6-0 before Drexel scored its first goal with six minutes left in the 1st.

UAlbany responded quickly as Kyle McClancy netted his first goal with a shot on the doorstep man-up.  Reh added another goal with 3:15 left in the quarter, then in the final minute of the 1st, Nanticoke found Egan for a close range shot and score, putting UAlbany up 9-1 after one.

The Purple & Gold kept the charge going with a McClancy laser shot to the cage 78 seconds in, then 13 seconds later, a Jack Burgmaster downward shot found its mark.  Nantcioke added his second goal next to the goal circle.  UAlbany continued to dominate faceoffs, as Sean Eccles scored on a hard shot, McClancy adding another, Nanticoke scoring from Fields, then with 57 seconds left in the 2nd, Eccles scored his second on a ground ball throw past the keeper’s feet, completing the 10-0 run.  Drexel’s Will Manganiello scored before the half’s end to make it 16-2 at the break.

UAlbany primarily went to its reserves in the second half, shutting out Drexel in the third quarter of play.  Mitch Laffin scored on a 10-meter heave from Nanticoke, then Steve Ramirez scored his first collegiate goal off a dodge.  UAlbany led 18-2 after three.

Drexel scored the game’s three final goals, the last two by Chris McLallen.  UAlbany’s lead proved sufficient as the Great Danes won 18-5.

UAlbany stays at home for its next game, hosting Cornell on Saturday, March 3rd at 1 p.m.  For ticket information for UAlbany men’s lacrosse games, fans may contact the UAlbany ticket office at 518-442-DANE or ualbanysports.com/tickets.
