UAlbany Men's Basketball Hosts UNH for 21st Big Purple Growl

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s basketball has returned home for the Big Purple Growl, taking on New Hampshire on Saturday, February 3rd at 7 p.m. in the SEFCU Arena.

This is the first game for UAlbany in seven days and first home contest in almost two weeks.  This is also the 21st annual Big Purple Growl.

This game will be broadcast online on AE on ESPN3 and will be on the radio on 104.5 the Team.

UAlbany earned a road win over rival Stony Brook 57-50 last Saturday and now stands tied for fourth place in the America East at 5-4 in the league and 17-7 overall.  New Hampshire fall at Hartford 79-62 to begin its second half of America East play, also being tied for fourth in the conference at 5-4 and 9-14 overall.

These two teams met in Durham on January 6th, with UNH taking the victory 64-61.  UAlbany has won nine of the last 13 meetings, with UNH having two of the last three wins, including the last game at SEFCU.  UAlbany leads the all-time series 22-16.

KEYBANK KEYS TO VICTORY (#KEYBANKKEYS): 
--Strong Off Bye: UAlbany will have its first game in seven days on Saturday; UNH played Wednesday. 
--Stop Leissner: Tanner Leissner is UNH’s lone double digit point scorer with 19.1 ppg. 
--Box Out!: These are the top rebounding teams in the AE: UAlbany at +6.8, UNH at +7.6.

JUNIOR DUO JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB: With a 30-point performance vs. Holy Cross on November 25th, Joe Cremo surpassed the career 1,000-point mark.  Cremo now stands with 1,302 career points, having averaged 14.2 points per game in his career.  Cremo earned the 1,000-point mark in 74 games played.

David Nichols joined the 1,000-point club on January 24th with 11 points at Vermont.  His 1,016 career points includes 625 in the 2016-17 year, the second-highest single season in UAlbany history.

Along with Cremo and Nichols, 11 UAlbany players have scored over 1,000 points in the DI era. 

NICHOLS NAMED TO LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST: UAlbany junior guard David Nichols has been named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List.  The Lou Henson Award is given each year to the top Division I mid-major player.

WILL BROWN - 277 VICTORIES AT UALBANY: In his 17th season at the helm of the Great Danes, Will Brown has 277 victories with the program, the most amount of wins in America East history with one team.

He is second all-time in victories in America East history, only behind Bill Herrion, who has 333 wins combined at Drexel and New Hampshire.

Brown has five NCAA Tournament appearances as head coach, tied for the most in America East history with Jim Calhoun, who had five with Northeastern.

BOX OUT!: Through 24 games, UAlbany has outrebounded its opponents in all but five contests, standing with the second-best rebounding margin in the America East at +6.8, and 23rd in all of Division I.  First in the league is New Hampshire at +7.6.  Greig Stire (8.2), Travis Charles (5.5) and Alex Foster (4.8) stand in the top-15 in the America East in rebounding.

SEVEN WINNING LEAGUE SEASONS IN A ROW: UAlbany has earned a winning record in America East play each of the past seven seasons starting in the 2010-11 year, including a combined 28-4 tally from 2015-16.  UAlbany has earned 10 winning seasons in America East play in the last 12 years under Will Brown. 

THE WALKING BUCKET: Nicknamed the “Walking Bucket” by head coach Will Brown after the win over Colgate, Travis Charles has earned double digit points in 20 of 24 games this season, averaging 15.0 points per contest and shooting 56.4% from the field.  He is also averaging 5.5 boards a contest.

SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE: New Hampshire has one player that averages double digit scoring: senior guard Taylor Leissner shoots 45.1% for 19.1 points and 7.7 rebounds a contest.  Senior Iba Camara is the top rebounder in the league with 10.8 boards a contest, adding 9.2 points per game.  Freshman Elijah Jordan is the point guard with 5.7 points and 3.3 assists a game.
