UAlbany To Celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day
ALBANY, N.Y. – On February 11, the University at Albany women’s basketball team will host Hartford at SEFCU Arena at 2:00 p.m. The game is the centerpiece of the University’s celebration of National Girls and & Women in Sports Day in partnership with the American Cancer Society.
"This is a great opportunity for UAlbany Athletics to engage the youth in our community," said UAlbany Senior Women's Administrator Cara White. "We are hosting an event where kids can interact with our outstanding female student-athletes who are champions on the field and in the classroom. Our goal is to provide these young athletes with an experience that helps them realize the power of sports and the positive impact it can have on their lives."
“We are excited to participate in the annual NGWSD and bring awareness to the ongoing effort toward equality and opportunities for girls and women in sports,” said women’s basketball Head Coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee. “Here at UAlbany, we are fortunate to have strong, high-character female student-athletes who are wonderful role models. These young ladies, along with our coaches, are thrilled to host an all-sports clinic to promote the importance of how sports and physical activity can help empower the young girls in our capital region. We ultimately want to help them become confident leaders of tomorrow.”
National Girls & Women in Sports Day celebrates its 32nd year on February 7, 2018. It is a day to celebrate the achievements in girls’ and women’s sports and the positive influence athletic participation brings to their lives while recognizing the ongoing efforts towards equality and access for women in sports and the nation’s commitment to expand sport and participation opportunities for all girls and future generations. The team for 2018 is Play Fair, Play IX, to raise awareness about Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, which ensures that students receive educational opportunities free from discrimination based on sex.
Women’s teams from the UAlbany athletic department will come together on February 11 to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day as one team in the fight against cancer. A clinic featuring representatives from the women’s teams will be held following the game for kids age 6-12. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about soccer, golf, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, and more from their favorite UAlbany sports stars.
To register your child for the clinic, please sign up by clicking here: https://acsedwc.ejoinme.org/ualbanyclinic. 100% of the $5 registration fee will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society.
Funds raised will help the Society fund lifesaving cancer research, provide free programs and services to Capital Region residents, access to 24/7 information and support through 1.800.227.2345 and cancer.org, and lodging assistance through the Hope Lodge© program.
