Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team improved to 11-2 on the season with a 68-65 comeback win vs. Canisius at home on Saturday night, riding a 24-point performance from Travis Charles.

Each side primarily went inside the arc for its scoring to begin the game.  UAlbany went up 6-4 with a couple consecutive layups from Joe Cremo and Greig Stire in the opening minutes.

Canisius had a span of six consecutive field goals made, including a couple in transition.  Three scores in a row, including a Selvedin Planincic dunk, gave Canisius a 19-10 advantage just over six minutes in.

UAlbany tried to chip away using perimeter shots, with David Nichols burying a long three and Alex Foster adding free throws to cut the deficit to four.  The next minute, Canisius hit a three and a jumper to rebuild the advantage to nine at 26-17 with 9:08 to go in the 1st, eventually leading by 10.

UAlbany’s defense held Canisius to a pair of scores in the final five minutes of the 1st, allowing the Great Danes to slowly come back.  A trio of Charles jumpers helped UAlbany pull to within one at 35-34 by halftime.

Both sides had a slow start offensively into the second half, with the teams each socring four points in the opening four of the 2nd.  After Canisius went up by three, jumpers by Charles and Stire sent UAlbany ahead.

UAlbany continued to hold down Canisius with its man-to-man defense, as Charles added a layup and one for a 45-41 UAlbany advantage with under 12 minutes left.

Canisius kept getting to within one possession, including off a layup from Jonathan Sanks, but UAlbany kept ahead, primarily on Charles jumpers.  Cremo hit two free throws with 5:07 remaining to make it 57-51 UAlbany.

Before the holiday break, UAlbany will complete its play in the Gotham Classic, heading to Louisville for a game on ESPNU on Wednesday, December 20th at 9 p.m.
