The University at Albany men’s soccer team locked up the fourth overall seed in the 2017 America East tournament Wednesday with a regular season finale victory at Binghamton. The Great Danes defeated the Bearcats 2-0 behind junior forward Nico Solabarrieta’s two goals.
Solabarrieta scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season, bringing him into a tie for the team lead in goals scored and vaulting him to the team lead in total points for the season. He scored his first goal in the 25th minute on an assist from Carlos Clark.
The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first half. Both UAlbany and Binghamton had taken five shots on goal through the first 45 minutes.
Solabarrieta’s second goal, assisted by Andreas Assiotis in the 68th minute, tied Solabarrieta’s single-season high of seven set last season. The 2-0 lead for UAlbany would prove to be the final score.
Binghamton upped the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting UAlbany 9-6, and 14-11 for the whole game. Binghamton placed eight shots on target compared to UAlbany’s five. Great Dane goalkeeper Danny Vitiello earned his seventh shutout of the season after making a season-high-tying eight saves.
Binghamton drew five corner kicks in the game compared to UAlbany’s two. All seven corners in the game came in the second half.
