Quote: “I think it’s a strong statement on how well we played that we feel disappointed to have only tied a quality team like Hartford.  I thought the girls were excellent in so many facets of the game, we just could not put the game away.  Vivian [Vega] was one of those bright spots tonight, and I’m thrilled for her to have tied the goal-scoring record tonight.  I have no doubt she will find a way to put a few more home this year to hold the record on her own.” – UAlbany head coach Nick Bochette

“It feels good to get the record, but we wanted to get three points tonight.  I think we found ourselves tonight, just wanted that better result.” – UAlbany senior forward Vivian Vega

Recap: The UAlbany women’s soccer team picked up a point in America East play off a 1-1 draw vs. Hartford on Thursday night in a rematch of the 2016 conference title match.

UAlbany saw Vivian Vega net a goal in the 21st minute for the 23rd of her career, tying the program’s all-time goals record with Shayla Bergeron, who played at UAlbany from 2010-12.

The Great Danes nearly struck in the 15th minute as a long range shot from Kimberly Dieroff hit the crossbar, then a rebound attempt by Sophia Eifler also drew the woodwork.  UAlbany got on the board in the 21st minute as a free kick to Miranda Badovinac was dribbled around a defender.  Badovinac fed the ball to a diving Vega for the first touch inside the left post for the goal.  In minute 33, UAlbany got the ball deep in Hartford territory, with a Mariah Williams shot being saved by a defender.  The resulting corner kick was headed by Katie Gowing out of bounds.  Hartford had a late threat, placing a corner kick high above the crossbar as UAlbany took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

UAlbany continued to be the aggressor, as Andrea Leitner saved long range kicks from Hartford and other UAlbany shots were blocked by Hartford.  In the 80th minute, Bridgette Alexander equalized on a turnaround shot to make it 1-1.  In the closing minutes of regulation, Williams got in front of the Hartford back line, but Maia Perez saved the 1-on-1 attempt.  The teams went into overtime.

Three shots came from UAlbany in the first overtime, with none going on cage.  Julia Carr took a long range shot in the 105th minute for Hartford, missing high.  UAlbany countered and saw Badovinac miss high.  Neither side could emerge with a goal as the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw.

UAlbany plays at home for its next game, taking on UMass Lowell on Sunday, October 8th at 4 p.m. at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
