UAlbany Women's Soccer Returns to Host Hartford, UMass Lowell

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s soccer team has returned home to play two conference games, starting with a rematch of the 2016 America East title game vs. Hartford on Thursday, October 5th at 7 p.m. on ESPN3, followed by a Sunday matinee at 4 p.m. against UMass Lowell on AmericaEast.tv.

Each game at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium is free to attend for the public. 

UAlbany is unbeaten against Hartford in its last three games, including 2-1 victories in the 2015 and 2016 America East title games.  All-time, Hartford leads the series 14-3-3.  UMass Lowell defeated UAlbany 1-0 in each’s conference opener last season in Massachusetts.  Since UML joined the DI ranked in 2013, UAlbany is 2-1-1 against the River Hawks.

UAlbany is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, falling at UNH 3-0 on Sunday, to enter at 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the America East.  Hartford fell at Stony Brook 1-0 in double overtime to stand at 6-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. UMass Lowell fell at Dartmouth 2-0 on Monday and will play Vermont on Thursday, entering the games at 3-5-3 overall and 0-2 in the America East.

VEGA - SECOND ALL-TIME IN GOALS AT UALBANY: Vivian Vega, who scored the game-winning goal against Hartford for the 2016 America East title, stands with 22 goals in their career, second all-time at UAlbany.  She is one goal away from tying for first in goals with Shayla Bergeron, who had 23 goals from 2010-12.  She has two goals this season.

FRESHMAN UP!: UAlbany will be relying on two freshmen to split the time in goal this season.  It will be the second year in a row that UAlbany will have its primary goalkeeper being a freshman.  Through the season, Andrea Leitner has started seven with a 66.7% save rate and 1.97 goals allowed average.  Sophia Chen has started three times at a 52.9% save rate and 2.67 goals allowed average.

KOPP WITH THE ASSIST: Caroline Kopp is rising up the leaderboard in assists, standing tied for fourth in the America East with three this year.  She also has 11 in her career, placing her fifth all-time in UAlbany history, five away from Kiana Rugar’s top mark of 16.  Kopp had six assists in 2016, the fourth-highest single season assists mark in program history.

MIGHTY MARIAH: Mariah Williams is off to a strong beginning as a starter at forward, scoring UAlbany’s first three goals this season, including 2-2 on penalty kicks.  Including the two goals vs. UConn last season, Williams had a streak of five goals in a row for UAlbany.  The junior has 13 career goals at UAlbany. 

THREE GREAT DANES NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS: Caroline Kopp, Savanah Courtney and Vivian Vega will serve as team captains for UAlbany women’s soccer for the 2017 season.

All three will be serving as captains for the first time this season under new head coach Nick Bochette. Vega, a senior, has started all three years while Kopp and Courtney, each juniors, have started each of the past two years on the back line.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Three Hartford Hawks have at least 11 points, led by sophomore forward Kaila Lozada with five goals and four assists.  Freshman Maia Perez stands in goal, saving 75% and allowing 1.32 goals a game.

With 10 out of 18 of UMass Lowell’s points, redshirt junior midfielder Rachel Morrier has four goals and two assists.  In goal is junior Julia Schneider with a 0.92 goals allowed average and a 85.9% save rate.
