First Half Downs UAlbany Women's Soccer at Denver 5-1
DENVER – Despite an equalizer goal from Mariah Williams in the 19th minute, the UAlbany women’s soccer team fell 5-1 at Denver with a strong first half by the Pioneers.
UAlbany (0-3) equalized an early Denver (3-0-1) goal with Williams scoring in minute 19. Denver responded with four more goals in the half to get the victory.
“Certainly not the result we were looking for, I just don’t think the legs were there after ten days of a lot of travel,” said UAlbany head coach Nick Bochette. “We ran into a strong team that made us pay for not being able to keep up the pace.”``
The defeat wraps up UAlbany’s road trip through Colorado, which spanned five days and two games.
Jessie Dancy had the first two goals for Denver, followed by two goals from Hannah Adler and another by Meg Halvorson. Brittany Wilson got the win in goal, finishing with two saves and a goal allowed.
Denver scored in its first dangerous chance, putting a corner kick into the box. The first two attempts were blocked, but the third came to Darcy for the close range shot and score, putting the home team up 1-0 in the sixth minute.
Leitner made her first collegiate save in the 15th minute on a line drive fire by Hannah Adler, as Leitner caught the ball.
UAlbany struck in the 19th minute as Badovinac found Williams running towards the end line. Williams ran between two defenders and kicked the ball inside the right post to tie the game at 1-1.
Denver got the lead back in the 26th minute as Darcy’s high-arc shot from the center of the box went under the crossbar for a goal.
In minute 31, Leah Swander tried a Crossfield shot from right to left, with Leitner diving and making the save.
Five minutes later, Leitner saved another long range shot from Swander, but on the rebounds, Adler scored to make it 3-1 Denver.
Denver added another pair of goals in the closing minutes of the first half, a long dribble, shot and score from Halvorson and a header from Adler off a cross to the box, making the eventual halftime score 5-1.
UAlbany’s defense held in the opening minutes of the second half, not allowing a shot on goal in the first 13. Macee Barlow tried from long range for Denver, with Leitner saving the shot near the post.
Leitner continued to defend well throughout the second half, including a diving save towards the right post on a hard shot from Riley Welch, then another leap and save off a line drive from Swander towards the left.
UAlbany was not able to muster a comeback in the second half and fell 5-1 at Denver.
