Men's Soccer Falls To Marist 3-2 In Season Opener

UAlbany Sports Information   08-25-2017

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – For the second consecutive season, the University at Albany men’s soccer team opened the season against Marist.  Last year, at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, the Great Danes (0-1-0) tied the Red Foxes (1-0-0) 2-2 after late-game heroics from UAlbany forced two scoreless overtime sessions.  This year, the Great Danes took a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but let up three consecutive goals to fall by a final score of 3-2.

The Great Danes, who ranked 19th in the College Soccer News preseason national poll fielded a starting lineup that included the top four scorers from the 2016 team who accounted for 28 of the team’s 39 goals in 2016.  After the Danes’ first two shots were saved, junior Daniel Krutzen broke through with UAlbany’s first goal of the season.  The Danes earned a corner kick in the 16th minute.  Senior Moosah Khanat took the kick short from the left side to junior Nico Solabarrieta, who quickly touched the ball back to Khanat.  Seeing Krutzen moving into position, Khanat passed the ball to Krutzen, who took a touch, and then ripped a shot from 25 yards out which dipped right over the Marist keeper’s head into the goal, ricocheting off the far back post.

The Great Danes took seven shots before allowing Marist’s first, which did not come until the 36th minute.  It would prove to be Marist’s only shot of the half, as UAlbany took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

UAlbany notched a second goal shortly after halftime in the 51st minute.  Redshirt sophomore Reid Conde took a throw in from the right side across midfield.  The ball made its way to the middle of the field to sophomore Brynjar Steinþórsson, who received the ball about 35 yards from the goal.  He saw Krutzen making a 30-yard run up the left side, and played a through-ball past the Marist defense to the top left corner of the box, catching Krutzen in stride.  Krutzen next played a short cross across the mouth of the goal to freshman Dominic Wooldridge.  From deep on the right side, Wooldridge touched the ball to a trailing redshirt freshman Owen Fingar about 10 yards from the goal line, who pushed the ball past the Marist keeper into the far side netting.  Fingar, a local product who hails from Scotia, N.Y., scored his first career goal for UAlbany.

Seemingly in control, things took a turn for the worse starting in the 65th minute, when Marist broke through with a goal to cut the Great Dane lead in half.  In the 76th minute, Marist tied the game, and then in the 82nd minute, Marist scored its third goal in 15 minutes to take a 3-2 lead which would prove to be the final score.

Shots were even in the second half, with each team taking eight.  The teams also each took five corner kicks, three each in the first half and two in the second.  UAlbany has not won a season opening game since 2010 (2-0 over Fairfield), having gone 0-4-3 since then, including tonight's result.

Next, the Great Danes will host their home opener on Monday, August 28 at 7:00 p.m. against Rhode Island.  It will be the first of three consecutive home games.
