UAlbany Sports Information   04-22-2017

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team (12-19, 3-9 AE) kicked off a four-game series against Marist (18-16, 7-5 MAAC) this weekend, playing the first two games on the road.  The Great Danes split the away doubleheader against the Red Foxes, falling 2-1 in the first game, and rallying to win the second game 4-3.

UAlbany scored immediately in the first inning.  Batting second, Kyle Sacks hit a single up the middle.  Evan Harasta next drew a walk.  The cleanup hitter, Kevin Donati, then hit an RBI single through the left side, scoring Sacks from second.

Marist didn’t score until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Red Foxes took the lead with two runs.  Marist would go on to win the game by the same 2-1 score.

Donati led the team with two hits, and recorded the team’s only RBI.  UAlbany starter Brendan Smith (1-4) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing one run (none earned) on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.  Dominic Savino pitched the last 0.1 innings, allowing one run (none earned) and one walk.

UAlbany scored one run on four hits with three errors in the field.  Marist scored two runs on three hits with no errors.

The second game lasted two full innings before either team scored.  UAlbany once again struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the third.  Patrick Lagravinese led off the inning with a single to center field, followed by a single through the left side by Alex Thul to put runners on first and second.  Eric Mueller grounded out to shortstop in the next at-bat, allowing both runners to advance one base.  Connor Powers broke the 0-0 tie with a single to second, scoring Lagravinese.  Next, Sacks hit a sacrifice fly to center, which allowed Thul to score to give UAlbany a 2-0 lead.

Marist responded with one run in the bottom of the third, and tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth.  Two more scoreless innings led to two more UAlbany runs in the top of the seventh.  After Mueller grounded out to second, Powers hit a double to right field, followed by a walk from Sacks to put runners on first and second.  Harasta hit a single through the left side to score Powers, and then Donati hit a single up the middle to score Sacks.

UAlbany held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, where Marist’s rally ultimately fell short by one run, ending with the Danes winning the game 4-3 to split the away leg of the four-game series.

Powers and Lagravinese led the team with three hits in the second game, and Donati added two more hits of his own.  Each of the first four batters in the lineup drove in one run.  UAlbany starter Kenny McLean (3-4) lasted 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Ray Weber pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.  Hunter Torres earned his second save of the season, pitching the final 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

UAlbany scored four runs on 12 hits with no errors.  Marist scored three runs on 11 hits, also with no errors.

“I thought we played two good games today,” said head coach Jon Mueller.  “The first game we got a little sloppy at the end, kind of put ourselves in a tough spot.  But these guys have been going through a tough stretch and for them to bounce back with that resiliency I was very, very happy for them.  We had a lot of good outings on the mound, and no errors in the second game, and when you do that you put yourself in a position to beat a good team on the road.  We’ll look to win this series tomorrow and build some momentum going forward to UMBC next weekend.”

The Great Danes will return home with the Red Foxes to play two more games on Sunday at University Field starting at 12:00 p.m.
