Four Great Danes Earn Awards as America East Announces Men's Basketball Yearly Honors

BOSTON – Four Great Danes have been honored as the America East Conference has released the yearly awards for the 2016-17 men’s basketball season.

Two Great Danes have earned America East All-Conference honors: David Nichols is on the First Team and Joe Cremo lands on the Second Team.  Devonte Campbell is UAlbany’s representative on the America East All-Defensive Team.

In addition, Nichols, Cremo and Mike Rowley were placed on the America East All-Academic Team.

Nichols earned his first all-conference team selection, standing fifth in the America East in scoring at 17.3 points per game.  The two-time America East Player of the Week also stands fourth in the league with 1.3 steals a game and eighth with 3.2 assists per contest, totaling 537 points, 216 field goals, 107 rebounds, 99 assists and 41 steals.  The sophomore guard has scored in double digits in 29 games this season.  In the classroom, Nichols has earned a 3.88 GPA in communications.

Cremo also is an all-conference honoree for the first time after being the America East Rookie and Sixth Man of the Year last season.  The two-time America East Player of the Week stands in the top-11 in the league in points per game (16.3), rebounds per game (5.3), assists per game (3.7), steals per game (1.2) and minutes per game (35.5).  The sophomore guard has scored in double figures in 28 games and has three double-doubles.  Cremo stands with a 3.34 GPA in journalism.

Campbell picks up all-defensive honors on his first year with the team.  The sophomore guard/forward joined the starting lineup during the conference season, averaging 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds a game.  Since joining the starting lineup on January 16th, the one-time America East Player of the Week has earned multiple rebounds each contest and notched three double-doubles.

Rowley earns a place on the America East All-Academic Team for the second season in row, holding a 3.51 GPA in business.  On the court, the senior forward has started all 31 games for UAlbany, standing 13th in the America East in rebounding, averaging 5.1 boards and 5.8 points per contest.  He has multiple rebounds in 30 contests and picked up a double-double vs. Canisius.

Vermont, the conference’s regular season champion, swept the conference major awards.  Trae Bell-Haynes is the Player of the Year, Anthony Lamb the Rookie of the Year, Darren Payen the Sixth Man of the Year, Dre Wills the Defensive Player of the Year and John Becker the Coach of the Year.

UAlbany will get set to take on Hartford in the America East Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 1st at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are currently available through the UAlbany ticket office and or by calling 518-442-DANE.
