Three Great Danes Named America East Fall Scholar-Athletes
2015-16 America East Fall Scholar-Athletes
ALBANY, N.Y. – Three UAlbany student-athletes, Paula Heuser of field hockey, Alexa Schneider of women’s soccer and Laini Leindecker of volleyball, have been honored as America East Fall Scholar-Athletes for the 2015-16 season.
These three make up half of the six America East Fall Scholar-Athletes. No other America East school had more than one scholar-athlete in the fall season.
Heuser was the National Field Hockey Coaches Assocation Northeast Player of the Year for the second straight season and the America East Midfielder of the Year for the third consecutive year, finishing third in Division I with 3.59 points per game off 34 goals and 11 assists for 80 points. The junior led UAlbany to a 19-3 record and a second straight America East Tournament title as the Great Danes finished the regular season with a #8 national ranking. Through the fall, she has a 3.83 GPA in business administration and is a two-time member of the America East All-Academic Team.
Schneider became the women’s soccer program’s first-ever two-time America East All-Conference First Team midfielder, leading the team and ranking fifth in the America East with seven goals, adding four assists for a UAlbany-best 18 points. The junior team captain led UAlbany to its winningest season in Division I history at 11-9-1, its first-ever America East Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. Schneider holds a 3.83 GPA as a double major in sociology and human biology, earning a place on the 2015 America East All-Academic Team.
Leindecker was selected as the America East Co-Player of the Year in volleyball, earning All-Conference First Team for the second straight year in 2015. She led the America East in kills per set with 3.57 and was in the top 10 with 3.19 digs per set, totaling 350 kills, 313 digs and 37 total blocks. The junior outside hitter captained UAlbany to be America East regular season co-championship and took the Great Danes to the conference title match with a 17-9 overall record. Leindecker was placed on the 2015 America East All-Academic Team, having a 3.70 GPA in human biology.
The rest of the three America East Fall Scholar-Athletes were Maine’s Jesse Orach for men’s cross country, UNH’s Laura Rose Donegan for women’s cross country and UMBC’s Bill Heavner for men’s soccer.
