Merrick Thomson Serving as Assistant Coach for U19 Canada Men’s Field Team

BRANDENTON, Fla. – UAlbany men’s lacrosse assistant coach Merrick Thomson will be serving in the same capacity for the Under-19 Canadian Field Men’s Lacrosse Team for the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) U19 World Championship.

“It is a true honor being named an assistant coach for Team Canada U19,” said Thomson. “Representing your country as a coach and player are the highest honors an athlete can receive, and I was fortunate enough to be named to the men’s 2010 Team Canada Roster and now as a coach. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and look forward to the challenge.”

Thomson is a former member of the Canadian national team in 2010 and is a native of Hamilton, Ontario.

Two weeks ago, Thomson was down at the IMG Academy for an invitation-only tryout for 60 U19 players from Canada.  The roster will be trimmed down to 30, and on January 10th, the team will scrimmage against the U19 United States team.

This is in preparation for the 2016 FIL Under-19 World’s Men’s Lacrosse Field Championship in July in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Thomson is serving as an assistant coach for U19 Team Canada under head coach Taylor Wray and associate head coach Matt Brown.  Thomson was hired as an assistant coach at UAlbany, returning to his alma mater, starting in the 2015-16 academic year.
