UAlbany Women’s Basketball to Begin 2014-15 Season in the Preseason WNIT
Preseason WNIT Official Release
ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s basketball team will begin the year in the Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), one of the most prestigious regular season tournaments in the sport.
“We are extremely excited and honored to be asked to play in the Preseason WNIT,” said UAlbany head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson. “It is a great tournament every year and our team will excited to play in such a high caliber event to start our 2014-2015 season.”
The Preseason WNIT encompasses a 16-team field of some of the top teams in all of collegiate women’s basketball. UAlbany, playing in this tournament for the first time in program history, adds a strong resume to this field, going 28-5 last season with its third-consecutive America East title and a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, eventual NCAA Tournament participants Louisville and Oklahoma battled in the Preseason WNIT finals, with the Cardinals winning 97-92 in overtime in Norman. Louisville would go on to play in the NCAA Quarterfinals. In 2011,the final saw a showdown between the top two teams in the nation, with Baylor defeating Notre Dame 94-81.
Of the 16-team field, 14 of the team had winning records, five went to the NCAA Tournament with four more going to the Postseason WNIT, five earned conference titles, five earning league regular season titles and all 16 earned double digit-win seasons in the 2013-14 year.
Joining UAlbany among NCAA participants in the field includes West Virginia, the Big 12 regular season champion and a team that the Great Danes took to the brink in the NCAAs, Penn State, the Big Ten champion and NCAA regional semifinalist, North Dakota, the Big Sky champion and Western Kentucky, the Sun Belt champion. The field also includes four Postseason WNIT participants from last year: Arkansas State, Colorado, Mississippi State and Seton Hall.
All participants will play at least three contests in the Preseason WNIT, which runs from November 14th through the 24th. The first round takes place from Nov. 14-15, followed by the second round from Nov. 16-17. The semifinals will be Nov. 19-20 with the final set for Sunday, November 23rd at 3 p.m. Those teams that fall in the first two rounds will play in consolation games from Nov. 21-22. All games are hosted on campus sites.
The bracket for the tournament will be released in June.
