Snow Leads UAlbany Conference Award Winners

America East Release

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The evening before the America East softball tournament begins features a barbeque banquet for the competing teams where the conference announces the winners of the major awards for the regular season.  University at Albany freshman catcher Elizabeth Snow led the way for the Danes’ awards Wednesday, being named conference Rookie of the Year.

Snow, who hails from Long Beach, California, is the fourth UAlbany athlete to be named Rookie of the Year.  She started all 39 games for UAlbany, batting .355 with 14 doubles, five home runs, and 26 RBIs.  Her batting average was fifth in the conference, and she led the conference in doubles.  Her RBI total was the highest among America East freshman.  Over the course of the season, Snow was named America East Rookie of the Week three times.  Snow is joined by Player of the Year Sydney Harbaugh of Binghamton, Pitcher of the Year Allison Curkrov of Stony Brook, and Coach of the Year Megan Bryant, also of Stony Brook.

The All-Conference award winners were also announced at the banquet.  UAlbany had four players named to the All-Conference First Team, four named to the All-Conference Second Team, three named to the All-Rookie Team, and two named to the All-Academic Team.

Snow, Brittany MacFawn, Maggie Cocks, and Vicky McFarland were UAlbany’s First Team representatives.  MacFawn became UAlbany’s all-time leader in strikeouts and victories this season, amassing 790 and 78 respectively for her career to date.  She went 16-5 on the season with a 1.53 ERA, striking out 175 and walking just 16.  MacFawn also threw two no-hitters in the final week of the regular season.  Cocks started all 39 games for UAlbany at shortstop and led the conference in batting average at .415.  McFarland, playing left field, traditionally led off UAlbany’s lineup, and led the team in stolen bases with 27 on 30 attempts.

Kelly Costello, Lauren Alcorn, Charlise Castro, and Marlin Solano were named to the conference Second Team.  Costello regularly lined up at second base for UAlbany and batted in the two-spot.  She ended the regular season batting .298 with three home runs and 19 RBIs.  Additionally, Costello stole 12 bases on 13 attempts.  Alcorn was UAlbany’s regular starter at third base, ending the season batting .238 with one home run and 15 RBIs.  Castro played first base and center field for the Danes, and hit .314 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs.  Solano, UAlbany’s designated player, hit .275 with two home runs and 23 RBIs.

Snow, Caitlin Cooper, and Mackenzie Thompson were named to the All-Rookie team.  Cooper made appearances as a position player and a pitcher during the season, batting .333 with six RBIs in 16 appearances.  As a pitcher, Cooper made five appearances, including three starts, going 2-0 with 16 strikeouts and six walks.  Thompson settled in as UAlbany’s second starting pitcher, earning a record of 8-2 in 13 appearances with 28 strikeouts, 15 walks, and an ERA of 2.15.

Cocks, a physics major, and Costello, an actuarial and mathematical science major, were named to the All-Academic Team.  To be eligible for the All-Academic squad, an athlete needs to have maintained a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Those selections were chosen by a committee made up of America East sports information directors, academic advisors and faculty athletic representatives.

Thirty-nine of the 46 All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic sections will be in action at the 2014 America East Softball Championship, which will be held at Stony Brook’s University Field Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10. The No. 2 seeded Great Danes face No. 4 Binghamton on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
